Figuring out how to report a postdoctoral fellowship (SCH $XXXX) is not intuitive.
I do not receive a W-2 or a 1099-MISC, and yet must report my entire fellowship as taxable. This should be much easier, and should not be done in the "deductions" section as it was in this version of turbo tax.
Turbo Tax is a user friendly tax preparation program. Walk you through the completion of the return, and the filing process step-by-step. By answering basic questions, it identifies opportunities for deductions, as well as, helps you avoidable making simple errors when completing the return.
What's great about it: Very use to use. Simplifies and clarifies tax rules and filing processes.
Federal walks you through everything. Very helpful, very smooth getting around. State will leave you hanging with unanswered questions. Tough to go back without starting over.
this is the second time I have had to amend my state return because even if you enter a contribution to a 529 plan in the Federal questionnaire, it will not carry over to the state. In our state, the state form is difficult to read, so it is not easy to determine if the deduction has been included in the return. Also, the amended return will not include the original refund on the amended return even if you input it in the questionnaire (it should be input automatically, but is not for some reason). Therefore, you have to actually go to the amended form and enter the prior refund.
What's great about it: the fact that it imports data from previous years
What's not so great: will not carry over input on Federal questionaire to State return for Contributions to College Savings 529 Plans
Always user friendly Makes taxes a breeze compared to filling out forms by hand and calculator. Thanks for a successfully helping me with my family's taxes for 7 years in a row!
What's great about it: Copies last year's forms and make it a breeze to edit and add!
