RE: HSA - it was first year my Co. had the option. I closed it in October and all money returned to me for payment of taxes; because my employer mistakenly told me I could have one even though I had registered for Medicare Part A. Consequently, all of my HSA contributions were "excess" since my allowed contribution was "0". Your program did not allow this to be input, but did show the returned (entire) HSA amount as taxable income, which was correct. However, the forms were wrong in my opinion (e.g., showed a 2012 carryover that I did not put in). This is probably unique, but excess payments are not, and the form errors are troubling. I sent a letter explaining my situation with my estimated taxes in October, which I told the IRS to keep on-file, so I should be OK.
What's great about it: Easy to use - intuitive and friendly; good questions that led to proper tax considerations; structured very nicely.
What's not so great: I had incorrect HSA forms (5329 $ 8889), which I could not correct. My 2013 HSA was entirely an excess contribution.
This is my first time using turbo tax and filing e-file. It was really simple following along with your guide. Not having to read and re-read over publications and instructions was great. I loved the Donations for Charity database for checking values. It helped me get back more of a deduction as I was always afraid that I wasn't sure of what were correct value amounts to list for donated items, so I know I never got close to what I should for their worth, but it was better than getting nothing I guess. Your database made it so much easier. Not having to print off forms over and over and publications and instructions was a great feature as you know just where to go to list everything on the forms. Am just hoping the IRS and state accept the e-filing. Takes less time, less paper, less cost with mailing, etc. I was always nervous that e-filing was too complicated, so now I will have to wait & see the final results; like getting my confirmations from IRS/state acceptance of my e-files. If all goes well there too, then Turbo Tax will be the way to go for me for all my future tax returns. Thanks for the help this year Turbo Tax !
What's great about it: simple easy guide, love the re-check process, saves me having to fugure the math & read instructions & pubs many times
What's not so great: words "compensatory damages" referring to 1099-misc income was not noted as a bullet option to select for 1040 line 21
TurboTax made the federal forms feel like a piece of cake. However, state forms were not well explained...questions like "apply any o/p must be entered"...which I have no idea what this means. Explanations of every question should be continued into the state returns.
What's great about it: Federal form was easy
What's not so great: State returns were complicated and not well explained
We have used Turbo Tax for over 10 years now and it is fast, reliable, and easy to follow....And paying someone hundreds of dollars for something that you can do yourself makes no sense to me, with their easy to follow step by step instructions and online help you can't go wrong.....
This is the first time ever i have prepared my own tax return, as I divorced within the last year. It was super easy to follow and use generally. But, it wasn't easy to import the support documents, and once I did manage to import one, it doubled some numbers and not others. Luckily I caught it. I did not like that it cost extra to get the long term audit support. You should stand behind your product and I shouldn't have to pay extra for that at the last step.
What's great about it: It is super easy to follow and complete
What's not so great: As soon as it launched it needed an update. In addition, it cost extra money to get audit support long term.
