My 2013 tax return experience

Despite not having used TurboTax last year, I was able to fill in the basic information needed and quickly completed my 2013 Federal and State taxes quickly, using TurboTax 2013. The step-by-step prompts and form review mode helped the process go smoothly. The Audit Defense gives me piece of mind if I have to deal with the IRS.
What's great about it: Quickly completed my Federal and State returns!
What's not so great: Employer and Bank info could not be automatically accessed.
There are two halves to filling out income taxes: federal and state (unless you are lucky enough to live in a state that doesn't have an income tax#. For the federal half, I highly recommend TurboTax. It finds about every deduction out there and is fairly simple to use. I give the federal portion of the program five stars.
The Minnesota program, on the other hand, continues to be poor, and has set a bad track record for several years in a row. Last year #2012 tax year# they were even temporarily removed as an approved vendor by the Minnesota Department of Revenue for calculation errors. And this year #2013 tax year# they continue a tradition of having errors in the program that require me to call tech support. This year #2013 tax year#, they had a page that said "uncheck the property tax refund M1PR box if you don't want to do that right now". And you could click on the checkbox all day long, and it wouldn't uncheck it. This is a problem because the state property tax document you need to fill out the M1PR may not arrive until mid-April #the M1PR form isn't due until August 15#, but you obviously have to file the rest of your taxes by mid-April. So almost everyone is going to want to uncheck that box, and you can't. And the program is also wordy or cryptic on many Minnesota pages, with very little help or explanations of the questions it is asking.
So after having had a track record of me having to call tech support for the Minnesota program for about three years in a row now, and for major bugs in the user interface or calculations in several of those years, the best I can give TurboTax as an overall product is three stars. Please put some effort into cleaning up and testing this Minnesota state product!
What's great about it: Federal program found me many deductions I had no idea of
What's not so great: Minnesota program continues to be poor every year.
It is suprising how easy it is to prepare my taxes, what has improved over the years is the tax help. If I have any questions the online access to anwers makes even those of us who are not financial wizards more confident to do our own taxes.
What's great about it: I have been using turbo tax for over 15 years and it keeps getting easier.
What's not so great: nothing really it does what I need.
