2013 Tax Software Review
on March 8, 2014

We file a joint return. It is good to see the difference between standard deductions and itemized deductions. Software is easy to use and steps the user through each section of the required tax forms. Have used Turbo Tax for several years and keep coming back to it.
What's great about it: Easy to use, pulls in data from prior return, easy to file returns
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have been using Turbotax since 2002 and this year seemed to be more complicated than usual. Navigating around the busy screen. To much clutter on the right side My state filing (PA) always wants to tax my company retirement pension that are not taxed in PA.
What's not so great: found it harder to use than last year
When you have a 1099B, the boxes from the various financial institutions and Turbo Tax do not always coincide. I think this is how the companies enter their data.
A problem with the NY State return occur was not noted until AFTER we clicked for the return to be filed. This was a 1099R form.
What's great about it: For the most part straight forward
What's not so great: Problem was not noted until the filing section
Geezer is now retired and has used TURBOTAX and QUICKEN for more years than his memory can recall and he keeps coming back - must be something happening that requires that he do this…longevity!
What's great about it: Helps one get through basic code complexity tax forms.
What's not so great: Prints two many blank pages for filing and tax records.
Have been using Turbo Tax for many years. The Program has steadily improved in detail and ease of use over the years. The automatic downloading of investment activities is especially valuable, as Schedule D has and is always a confusing form and this ability eliminates the frustrations involved.
What's great about it: Ease of use,
What's not so great: Not realy a con but: Reduces understanting of the tax rules as there is no longer a need too.
