Long before there was a TurboTax for the Mac, there was a program called "MacInTax" that I used until Intuit bought them out, so I've been using TurboTax in one form or another for a long time. The program has gotten better over the years, although I don't particularly like the idea of changing the user interface every couple of years or so. Find a good one and leave it alone. Otherwise, the carry-forward of information from the prior year return is worth half the price of the product for me - i hate typing any more than I have to. To be honest, I have never even looked at other products for taxes, so that said I think TurboTax is the best tax preparation program out there. And the fact that they offer a range of options for preparing and filing you returns - online, download free copy of the federal program, etc. makes it all that much easier for the casual one return per year client. Excellent product.
What's great about it: Ease of use, compilation of correct forms for the return
What's not so great: State return portion doesn't allow any "jumping in" at the right point in the interview to make a change
I've been using Turbo Tax for years, it's simple and gives me the peace of mind that I need and I feel that my personal information is protected because I have it all in my hands, not in the hands of a stranger
I like TurboTax. I've always had it do what needed to be done. I think that buying state tax editions AND then having to pay to submit those returns is a bit of overkill - will make me rethink doing the state taxes with the software.
What's great about it: good detail, checks for all options, holds your hand through the entire process
What's not so great: a lot of skipping around, pricey state addtions
Your box 12 suffix for 1099R when documenting excess ROTH IRA Distribution is JP. The P is for 2012 distribution and later you indicate 100R is for 2014. Why not just make a suffix code for 2013 excess distribution and done...one stop shopping!
What's great about it: Organized Presentation
What's not so great: 1099R - Excess ROTH IRA Distribution Process Confusing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
