Even though I have to use the standard deduction now, the ease of downloading w-2's and personal info from previous returns speeds up the filing process. I have a lot of confidence in this product and company.
What's great about it: step by step progression, uses prior year's info to eliminate manual entry
What's not so great: could explain fund & stock sales info better
I like the step by step guidance entering information into the return. I have to do estimated taxes and that is where I had the most trouble. For federal estimated taxes you need to have additional separate entry boxes to define what "other deductible taxes" are such as state and local taxes, personal property taxes, etc. Under "Other Income" you need to have separate entries for 1099R's, state tax refund, interest income, etc. For VA state estimated taxes you need another box for additional deductions (for example LTC insurance premiums are deductible).
What's great about it: Step by step guidance through return
What's not so great: Estimated tax instructions weak
It's easy to follow and choose in each category what you need to work on. The state program (MN) was much easier this year. It took me a few minutes to realize our refund was already calculated and I was just into it. Very nice!
What's great about it: Makes things easier to follow
Turbo tax did correctly process the deduction for Long Term Care premiums paid on VA state refund, but the Error Check program flagged a missing entry in the Tax Credit section however TT never asked for that information, and also didn't go back and retrieve that from prior state returns. After a lot of research on my own through the VA tax website, I was able to manually determine the correct entries, no thanks to Turbo Tax. Other reviewers also note that this has been an on-going BUG in TT software that they seem to be unable to fix.
What's great about it: Easy to use, generally good tutorials and instruction
What's not so great: Continuing error in VA state in the Long Term Care credit/deduction section
I had unemployment income and job search expenses that were new to me this year. With TT deluxe, I was able to find the documents needed to input the info and kept my taxes low even though I did not deduct taxes from the unemployment benefits. Job search expense info was somewhat weak, however if treated as a business expense the guide helped a lot. I also had an annuity loss, and after extensive internet research determined that a specific investment loss form was needed. i couldn't find it in forms, but when I tried to enter the loss amount on the 1040 line, it automatically popped up, and I copied the amounts entered on a form I had downloaded from the IRS. Possiibly the premiere version would have had more info, but spending much of the year unemployed, it was not affordable. I was also able to calculate the ACA penalty for my son with the new ACA interface, although I hope the ACA effort (totally unrelated to taxes, except for the increased taxation) did not increase costs for Turbo Tax. If there is extra expense, please have it as an extra cost module and don't penalize us any more than it already has.
What's great about it: imported info, handled several situations I was less familiar with, overall tax information gathering fairly complete
What's not so great: I needed a particular form (for showing annuity loss), and could not find it in the "Forms' section.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
