I had almost no problems completing the taxes this year. TurboTax helped me knock out my taxes in under 2 hours, including the download update and completion of filing for both Federal and State. Only knock I have for this year was with my investments and the messages that Intuit was updating records, but at the end an update was available that cleared that up. Maybe consider asking to do an update in the beginning to prevent any concerns.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Past years' software allowed a step-by-step questions for the state #MA# return. Now it does not go through step by step over all possible deductions. It goes straight to the review and filing. I was doing a return where there was rental expense. The federal questions asked if I was a home owner; the answer was no. However, no where did it ask if there was a rent question. Luckily, I went into the forms to locate that information. There was a difference from a $35 refund to a $190 refund. I would like to see the step-by-step questions for the state return as well be brought back.
Used TaxSlayer last year, but had some changes this year and wanted a little more guidance. Turbo tax walked me through each credit and deduction step by step. After doing a trial run of my taxes on TaxSlayer, both amounts were about the same. However, when it came time to actually e-file my return, it took a while. It said the forms were not ready to check for updates. I ran the updates and it still would not file. There were no more updates so I signed out and back in....still wouldn't e-file. I had to restart my computer before the e-file would work.
Wow - what a diff when you lose college tuition and the student too!! Ouch!! The CD has a useful tool to compare MFJ & MFS at this stage in our lives...came in handy!
This seems to get simpler each year that I use it! First, I'm accustomed to the categories and know what to save throughout the year and what stacks to create. With that done, it's like filling out a form. Hard to make mistakes doing it this way.
