Turbo Tax shouldn't say everything is fine because if you don't know what you're doing you can enter information correctly but it can be so wrong in reality that the novice thinks it's okay. So if there is any kind of difficult tax problem the novice should not be doing there own taxes.
But for me, I love that I know enough that I can with confidence do my, my children and my grandchildren's taxes.
I have used TurboTax for the last 6 years to assist me in preparing my taxes. I have always felt very comfortable with the software and my perception of how accurate the calculations are.
I've used Turbo Tax for the last 7 years to do my taxes and like the easy of doing my taxes in the comfort of my own home. I feel comfortable using the application as it has proven itself over the years. I feel confident that when I do my taxes that I'm using the most up-to-date tax laws. I love the audit potentials identified at the end of the return which gives me the peace of mind of know what to expect if audited.
I normally use TurboTax every year with no issues whatsoever, but this year was different. For my state return, I was filling out information for form M1PR, as I have for several years, and TurboTax kept giving me an error. Apparently, TurboTax thinks that I am supposed to have something in line 5 from a different form, even though that other form is obsolete and line 5 is supposed to be empty. I could not get past this issue, so I had to fill out that form manually (defeats the purpose of tax software).
I then went to e-file my federal return, and it gave me another error! The error said that TurboTax was out of date, and that I had to update. I thought that was weird since I had just updated it, but I checked for updates anyway. No updates! Still couldn't e-file, so I had to resort to sending in my federal return by mail.
Overall, this year with TurboTax was a disappointment. I will give them another shot next year because of the previous years of success, but that's their last shot.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
Imports all information from previous years, imports W-2, and other financial documents. Math is always correct. Electronic filing, what else would anyone need?
Working on pension exclusion, Turbo Tax stated my 502 was not complete. No explanation. I had to go to the MARYLAND tax site to find out what was missing. Then I had to search for the needed worksheet. Previous versions would automatically hi-lite worksheets.
