TurboTax Deluxe 2013

I've been using TurboTax for over 10 years and have been very pleased with the results. I have a somewhat complex tax situation (the printout is almost an inch thick), but Deluxe has done well with the complexities. They have refined the interview process each year and generally it is improving and simplifying the process inputting information that allows TurboTax translate this into data and puts it into the right places in a myriad of complex forms. The import of data from my financial institution is a lifesaver and I am sure I would never attempt it any other way. Every year I do find some issues. This year one was a glitch that the data import didn't accept/record a zero basis on a stock sale. The state tax part of the program has been good on typical things but every year it has trouble with allocation of tax credits between spouses. The most troubling issue this year was repeated program crashes (on my Mac) during the Fed filing process. No problems in the preceding week of heavy use. After reading the help info on line I was able to get past this (yes I was using the Mac version). Another troubling issue this year (hasn't been a problem in past years) is failing to provide opportunity to print out state forms for filing when I selected e-file for Fed and file by mail for state. TurboTax led me through e filing and printout of record copies but didn't provide an option to print the state forms. I had to manually go back in the outline to final review and repeat the steps to get back to a printing option. I couldn't find the normal print options offered in past years.
Easy to use software no matter how many financial items we had. Easy to go back and forth to the forms from the easystep. Used TurboTax for over ten years when it was call Macintax.
Examples: I had a difference in a 1099R based on a VA disability. I corrected the 1099R taxable income, but it did not come up on the summary, so I had to show a difference in gross income on your 1099R worksheet. Questions were referred to the community rather than your on line experts as in the past. I selected to file my federal return by mail to make a note of the 1099R difference.. At this point everything seemed to crater. Nothing led me to file my state return by efile. When I wanted to print out my total set of worksheets, you took me to the web. Arggh! When asked if I wanted to file estimated taxes, I said no, but you had me print out receipt forms for estimated taxes anyway. I hope you'll get thiings straightened out by next year or my regular purchase will be cancelled.
Completing the foreign tax credit steps is a problem. I followed the interview, however, when the program goes through checking for errors it wants more information. When I finally put in what I thought may be what was asked for, it didn't seem to make any difference in the final calculation.
Looking at questions asked in the help section I see I am not the only one with this concern. Hopefully this can be fixed in the future.
I have my own, modest small business with no employees. Doing my own taxes would be essentially impossible for me without TurboTax. It would cost much more to hire a CPA and that would hurt, since my income is modest because I'm semi-retired. I simply don't know what I would do without TurboTax. It simplifies my life enormously as we approach April 15 every year.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have been using Turbo Tax for about 10 years, and remain a faithful customer who admires this product for its ease of use and completeness. It takes what used to be a terrible job, and makes it as easy as possible. (As possible being the key phrase here. Anything as complex as our tax code cannot be made easy, but Turbo Tax comes as close as anything.) With W-2's, a separate business, and SS income all to deal with, Turbo Tax is a God send.
I've used TurboTax for many years and have been very satisfied with the product. This year I had K-1 income and had trouble carrying the K-1 information over to my state (Illinois) return. I submitted a question to the help desk but have not yet received a reply. I was finally able to manually enter the data and submit my return. Also, the accounting of tax exempt dividend income in the summary was confusing. Otherwise things worked fine.
