I liked Turbo Tax a lot this year. I ran through it quickly and without frustration. Just in one place I had to flip back and check my daughter's ss# and I couldn't do it without flipping through several "pages" of the form.
Works great but, my direct deposit information only printed on my Federal Return. The bank routing number fields on the State Return were un-editable. Had to hand enter this information onto my state return, which on the printout was very very small. Also, I received an alert on my state return that I must file a copy of Federal 1040 schedule A if I itemized my deductions. Since I didn't itemize on my Federal but did on my State, I was a bit confused. Does this statement mean, if I itemized on my Federal return? Since my Federal, Schedule A didn't print out, I was left paranoid about filing my State return.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
Excess Roth needs radical review. It is very confusing to handle and does not adequately deal with it being corrected in one year and the excess being taxable even though it will not be on a 1099 until a year later but coded for the prior year. Very confusing. Then it calculated the tax incorrectly. It added the 6% penalty even though I indicated it had been refunded along with the excess. I had to eliminate everything about the Roth IRA and add the taxable excess as "Other Income" to get it on the tax forms correctly - a hassle. I'm sure dealing with this is rare but it is an area that needs addressing both for accuracy and clarity. I'm a CFP and work with money and could not follow the flow of instructions dealing with this area.
Overall, TurboTax is great. It asks ALL of the right questions, allowing you to sail through the tax preparation process. It may be user curiosity, but I've found myself second-guessing TurboTax, checking into what it is asking me (looking for specific forms, an explanation of certain expenses, etc.) and TurboTax allows me to do this checking and is very helpful, but I've found myself in over my head a couple of times and eventually learned that TuboTax asked me the questions it needed to in the first place.
Have used Turbo Tax for quite a while and have been very pleased with the service. Have used Tax Resource and they have proven to be a great asset to us. All in all this is the only way we will do our taxes in the future.
