I found two serious errors. 1. The program miscalculated the amount of state tax paid last year, doubling the actual sum. I had to manually input the correct numbers. 2. Using the step-by-step, I entered the employer's contribution to business expenses, but the data was never saved in the proper field. Every time I reopened the file, I had to re-enter that information. I finally got smart and put the data in the correct field manually and that solved the problem. I have used Turbo Tax for years and have found it to be a solid program. This is the first time I've discovered errors.
What's great about it: organized, for the most part it got the info in the right places
What's not so great: the step by step is very slow and often doesn't ask the right questions
Everything was positive, except for the error relating to a Mass. tax credit carryover. This was probably an error in a previous year's form that resulted in a carryover credit (Septic Credit, Mass Form SC) from 2012 that should not have been allowed since the total credit amount had been used up in the previous four years. After checking the previous year's tax filings and confirming that no carryover was available, I was able to delete the form and prevent a credit from being claimed for 2013. If not caught, this probably would have resulted in an audit.
What's great about it: Covered most items well with good explanations
What's not so great: Apparently an error was made on a previous year's form
I have been using TurboTax since 2008. I like it in that it pulls info from previous years filings (account names and addresses) as well as the import feature (good for investment accounts). Also I like the ease of recalculations if you miss something and enter it later (problem if done by hand). The one downside is that it is sometimes difficult to identify what has been entered elsewhere (charity taken as payroll deduction and reported on W2; Medicare Health insurance premiums entered under Other Income and reported on Schedule F). This is only picked up if you read the "?" details
What's great about it: Carry forward of previous years entries; import of forms
What's not so great: Sometimes difficult to understand if things have been taken into account elsewhere
Frustrating, would not validate. program did not indicate why. After much looking found a recommendation to reboot and this helped. seems to be working now. reviews indicate this is a problem when using a desktop mac.
What's not so great: would not validate and would not tell why
