State Return was horrible
on March 30, 2014

Website promoted free state filing for lower income which my children which are students qualify. However, the TurboTax product did align with the website. It was charging me for each of my students. I ended up using TaxAct with worked great and did not charge me. It is said when I buy TurboTax, but then need to use TaxAct to file my dependents returns. I have used Turbo Tax for over 10 years now. It appears it is time to change.
IA State return had a bug. It required me to enter a name for line 4 of my interest income. There was not anything in line 4. Just lines 2 and 5 had values. I had to repeat my bank in lines 1, 3, and 4 with $0 to get past the faulty edit.
I also just failed an audit for 2011 on my HSA data. It was entered into the tool correctly, but TurboTax did not include the qualified expenses on the second HSA form. I was not happy.
What's great about it: Mostly accurate and easy to use. Help descriptions are great.
What's not so great: IA State return has a problem.
The language they use to guide you through the steps is perfectly written to be personable, succinct, and accurate to the dry information needed for doing taxes. And the user interface of the software is great. It is so easy to jump in and out of different sections of the process, putting in information as you find it, or editing details already entered if you find new papers/numbers in your year-in-review. I couldn't be happier with how the process turned out. Took a week-long ordeal and made it less than a day-long, and relatively pain-free.
What's great about it: Easy Language, Easy Software!
What's not so great: nothing that isn't inherently a con of doing taxes every year
Pros: I moved, My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I've been using Turbo Tax for years and it's the only program I know so I can't compare it to the other programs out there, but I am satisfied with this so why try the others!
What's great about it: Easy to follow steps.
What's not so great: Bothers me I have to pay for efiling my state taxes.
I use this on a Mac and finding it on my hard drive can be challenging due to the way it installs. Very through and clear guidance and quick to calculate your taxes. I especially like the running total of 'refund/taxes due' in the upper left corner. I did have problems this year with e-filing. TurboTax refused to transmit the e-file claiming there were updates to the program that needed to be applied even though it also claimed no updates were available. I finally closed and reopened the program and it went through. This is probably my 12th to 15th year sing TurboTax. One year I tried a competitor and then went back. Great product
What's great about it: Love the error checking and the probability of audit.
What's not so great: Frequent updates can prevent efiling
