distributions from IRAs (traditional) have a Required Minimum Distribution after age 70, regular pensions don't. Despite this, every pension distribution requires an answer as to whether or not the pension payments are/are not the RMD amount. STUPID!
What's great about it: no more time than getting ready for an accountant & filling out his forms
What's not so great: many inflexible answers required that are not correct
The first year I was quite skeptical as to if this was worth the money, then I completed my taxes in under 2 hours, and that's after reviewing them twice to make sure I captured everything. This year, same thing, under 2 hours and couldn't be happier with the outcome and ease.
What's great about it: Did my taxes in less than 2 hours
Love Turbo Tax. Should be obvious since it is the only tax program I've used since DOS days. Love the realtime calc/recalc of amounts owed/refunded. Love the pop-up detailed worksheets that auto fill required lines on Fed Forms. Really, Really love the financial institution integration that auto completes complex stock/fund info such as gains, losses, interest, dividends, etc. That is a Godsend if one has a lot of mutual funds.
What's great about it: Easy to use. Love the Step-by-Step walk throughs.
What's not so great: Should have a Big Red Save button on the blue banner header to facilitate FREQUENT saving.
The foreign tax credit area did not work for me. I may have missed something but here is my experience:
TT first asks for a listing of all countries where tax was paid. After listing them, TT did not retain them. Then it asks for the first country and then for an entry of the INCOME. It then asks for another country and that income. I never did see a place to enter the TAX. Then it seems to lose all entries. Switching to step-by-step after making several more country and income entries, I find an entry for the tax as $7 which does not relate to any of my entries.
I have used this for years and every year it is more complicated for me. TOO MUCH marketing vs. simple processes. I need to cancel. You help is now my complicated process!
I have used TurboTax for years and like it more every year. It is so easy to use and is very complete in covering all tax items. The videos are great if you're not sure about a specific item. Even if we had to pay more tax, I am very confident that TurboTax explored every option to reduce the tax we owed.
What's great about it: User friendly, thorough in covering all items and great explanations.
