I have used TurbaTax for over a decade but I think next year I will look for a different Tax program. There are just too many placed that we get charged. After purchasing the software it is not spelled out until you have bought the program and are ready to file.
I have used and will continue to use Turbo Tax. This year we had a K-1 from a trust to add to our taxes. I had some frustration dealing with the 1116 form which wasn't required for this return. Other than that, I am pleased with the program.
What's great about it: The guide through the topics was a plus!
What's not so great: It was difficult to remove an unwanted form once it had been generated
I have to say after using Turbo Tax for a lot of years I was disappointed this year, yet it is still the best, least expensive way to do your taxes.
I did find some flaws in the software this year (some (39) were caught by the audit review process, but should not have gotten this far). 1. I had a number of donations, but during the interview it only had me add addresses on the 1st few. The audit review process caught the others and forced me to update the form. 2. I made an additional prorated payment to my HSA & this information is used else where on another form. An explanation was required, but was not caught until the audit review process. 3. I had foreign taxes on some of my mutual funds. Again an explanation was required on the 1116 form which was caught by the audit review, however the error message was very cryptic and it took me a while to figure out the reference and what else I needed to do, including adding some asset basis amounts for the countries. This should have been dealt with in the interview process. 4. I sold a home we inherited and there was nothing in the interview process to point me in the right direction for this. 5. On the Kentucky return, I had some energy efficient credits it would not let me take. When I went to the forms, I discovered that it automatically checked yes for energy star home credit taken, which I never did and it never asked. After checking no manually I was able to get my $500 in credits. 6. Kentucky charges interest for any underpayment. The automatically spreads what you paid on the W-2 equally & automatically to the 4 quarters. In my case most of the money was paid in the 1st 2 quarters, because I retired, before I retired. By manually adjusting the amounts to the correct quarters, it reduced the amount of interest owed. Again there should be something in the interview process to allow this.
Last, Turbo Tax Deluxe used to have a planning tool that I can use throughout the year to keep adjusting my estimated taxes as situations change. I have not seen that tool in a couple of years. They need to bring it back.
What's great about it: Easy to use for almost every tax situation
What's not so great: There are some flaws that had I not reviewed the forms, I would have over paid.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Once you get all your paperwork in order, it's as simple as answering the questions and walking through the needed sections. Less than 3 hours start to finish counting a few interruptions. I'll be using TurboTax next year.
What's great about it: Question and answer guide through return
I have a condo I own with my brother and sisters. We have expenses that are prorated and others that are specific to me. I could not find a way to get to the schedule E and manually make the change.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: I found it difficult to get to the actual forms to make changes.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I swear this is the last year I use Turbo Tax. Turbo tax never supported the NYC form 1127 for non-resident employees which I always found inconvenient. This year the program was extremely slow, made me update it every time I wanted to do some important step, and skipped numerous screens such that I had to manually enter information directly to the forms. It took me an hour to do the simplest return. What a horrible product.
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: the program is slow, skips over pages, is inconvenient, does not give me any flexibility
I have used the Turbo Tax - Basic for almost 10 years now and I have never had any kind of problem, and have always gotten the best refunds. I will continue using.
