packaging confusing. similar layout and color scheme - wanted Fed and state, accidentally got only the Fed package. Had to pay dramatically more to add State after the fact.
What's great about it: quickly finished taxes, simple concise questions
I have been using TurboTax for many years. It is simple to use and I feel confident that my returns will be accurate. The hardest part is getting all my paper work together! As I have aged and my returns have gotten more complex, the Deluxe version has suited my needs!
What's great about it: automatic calculations
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
The once dreaded tax time is no longer an issue. I've been using TurboTax for at least 5 years, and have been relieved of hundreds of dollars of fees to a CPA or an EA (enrolled agent). The process is straightforward, and you are guided through each page or form thoroughly and completely. If you can read, this is the way to go. Do not be intimated by the "tax season" again. Get Turbo Tax!!
What's great about it: Very straightforward, easy-to-follow guide through headache of filing tax forms.
What's not so great: No complaints whatsoever!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have been using TurboTax for a long time and never had any problems with filing or sending the information. It's Deductable really help with all those donations, money and items, that I gave. I am very skiddish about putting my Social Security number on the internet, with all these fears about stealing identities and hacking computers, but TurboTax has never let my information get in the wrong hands. I am not saying they never will, but they do take a lot of painstaking measures to allow me to have peace of mind. I didn't know some things were tax write-offs, and a human will forget to ask. TurboTax will ask everyone because a computer program doesn't care or judge me, it does what it is programed to do. That is make sure my tax is low and my refund is high. Plus, it compares my return to previous years. Now I ask why my income shrunk when I haven't changed jobs in 5 years and I got raises. Thank you!
What's great about it: Asked all the questions for a very high refund!
What's not so great: Some questions I had really not addressed. A real person may help.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
This year, TurboTax took us on an endless loop ride, saying there were no errors, yet constantly looping back to saying one return was not yet finished. It never showed what was unfinished! Finally, we gave up and printed it as is and sent it off. If we get audited, we'll just have to explain that it was TurboTax's fault. We're just average citizens and can't be expected to comprehend tax laws; if the program can't make it clear, then it's hopeless. At one point, under a heading of "Refund Claimed," it said "You have indicated that 0 has died…"! We were NOT claiming a refund and never indicated that ANYONE died. VERY strange.
What's great about it: I like that it calculates everything
What's not so great: I don't like that it has no explanations for many required line items that most laymen will not understand
