The Federal tax return steps were more specific and helpful than the state. I did like though that the steps all seemed like I was talking to a person. It was in terms the average person could understand.
I didn't like that at the end the only way I could print or save it was through a PDF. My computer can't read PDFs so I couldn't print it or save as a file that I could view later.
Like the run through on detail on Fed - missed it on state return. Did not appreciate the increase in cost after a one-month wait to file my finished returns. Otherwise, have used it for years and like the format. Keep up the improvements.
What's great about it: Detailed review of total return
What's not so great: Payment procedures not completely clear; state return not detailed
I am a CPA so I am probably a little biased, but Turbo Tax is a huge time saver for me. I only use it for my family and a couple of friends I do gratis, but it is a real timesaver. If you go to the trouble of collecting and organizing all the information for your accountant, you might as well do your taxes yourself. It's really not that hard unless you have a lot of investments to deal with. If you do, and you haven't majored in business, it could be a bit challenging. I have been a Turbo Tax user for at least 20 years.
What's great about it: Easy to use product
What's not so great: none
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
I efiled Fedl and authorized direct debit. When filing state, I previously had indicated direct debit also, however when I asked for a printed copy to mail, the cover sheet for efiling was printed even though I had indicated that I would mail state. Did not have this problem in previous years. Had to go back and start filing process all over and lie by saying I would mail Fedl in order to get into mailing state area (even though Fedl had already been efiled. Turbo Tax did acknowledge that Fedl has been efiled during this second time through). Time wasted....perhaps my fat fingers, perhaps the program.......
What's not so great: Got confusing if you efile Fedl and mail state
I've been using Turbo Tax for as long as I can remember - always easy and accurate - like that you can get state forms as well - makes filing a breeze.
What's great about it: Fast, accurate interview format.
What's not so great: You used to have a "What If" tab (how things would reduce tax or not) - Liked that feature.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
