A little worse every year
on March 28, 2014
Posted by: morriss003
It may be the tax forms, but each year TurboTax seems to be a little more difficult to complete. I would hesitate to recommend it to a friend was had not yet used a software tax form, unless they were filling out a very basic form.
What's great about it: Basic information is easy to enter
What's not so great: When weird things happen it's frustrating

its very unclear on the post 9/11 GI bill that has been passed to your child from military members. its very hard to understand the regulations on what you can claim.
What's great about it: smooth step by step process for most
What's not so great: does not have detailed info
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

2013 Fed & PA Income Tax Returns
on March 28, 2014

The system is basically user friendly especially for a non computer type like me.
The one frustration I experienced was with the State Taxes deduction on the Federal calculation. I down loaded the TurboTax disc on 3/28/14. When I got to the portion of Schedule "A: regarding State Tax option of Sales Tax vs. actual taxes paid, it stated, "Form not available will be available by 12/30/13".
This was confusing since it was already 3/28/14. I later found out after I had wasted time trying to get an answer on how to down load this updated form, that it was available ONLY after I finished completing all other information required.
I then could down load the missing form, but had to return to re-do the input to Schedule "A".
A quick solution would be to have the disc programmed to check for the LATEST version of forms etc. BEFORE anyone started to complete the forms.
Other than this item, the program was user friendly.
What's great about it: I liked the explanations of the questions about the area that was needed.
What's not so great: Did not enjoy waiting until the end of inputs to check to see if the forms I had were the latest.

Better than last year

Mostly smooth, although it continues to not force you to do the AMT, even though it is REQUIRED BY THE IRS. Unless you completely quit out of the application, it will continue to think there are updates forever. Seriously, it updated 5 times in one session (and wouldn't efile) before I quit the thing and re-ran. Now there were magically no updates.
What's great about it: mostly works
What's not so great: more obvious bugs they never seem to test for

not for the timid taxpayer preperation person

This year you missed the mark of giving quality product that was easy to understand for the novice tax preparer. It was hard understanding sentences' that were poorly written # which usually meant two meanings#.Last year's software was 100 % better, and it did not have a printing problem. Nor a transfer of data to the governing bodies that want our money. I guess you need some one to review the software who is a customer not a programmer. I for one am a customer. Good luck, I'll be glad to review you software before it becomes publicly used. Heaven knows you need the help!
What's great about it: easy loading, but lacked correct print formate drivers.
What's not so great: it seemed harder this year, not friendly, no verbal script, no definitions on usage of words to explain tax sentance.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Gets locked into a never ending "do loop" in the review. Finally have click "skip it" then brings you to a message "board" that says to the effect "Oregon residents must file tax returns". Stupid program, we just finished doing my state tax return, we just reviewed it, we are done, time to move on, don't you get it? etc, etc, etc.
What's great about it: steps you thru
What's not so great: too much detail

Easy $$$

I've used Turbo Tax for years now and wouldn't file any other way. I've used the popular tax preparation companies in the past which did the job, but who wants to pay those outrageous fees? Turbo Tax makes it quick and easy and makes sure you check every aspect of filing so nothing is missed and you maximize your refund. Turbo Tax is great! I've converted family members over to using Turbo Tax and they love it too!
What's great about it: Easy to use and great explanations
What's not so great: none
Pros: I moved

K-1 Statements
on March 28, 2014
Posted by: GatorFan2014
The process of entering information into TurboTax from K-1 statements on the Federal forms was complicated. I recommend that TurboTax enhance the K-1 features and functionality to make the K-1 process more user friendly and efficient. The current K-1 process in TurboTax is too confusing and at times requires that the customer research tax law to determine how to complete the data entry in TurboTax. I expect that TurboTax would lead me through the process and reduce the research burden.
The K-1 process in the state of Pennsylvania return requires enhancement as well. TurboTax prompted me to enter the portion of my Federal K-1 filings that are applicable to the state of Pennsylvania. I was expecting that TurboTax would lead me through this process rather than require the customer to research PA state income tax law to determine how to populate the TurboTax format. As a novice, I do not know how to distinguish K-1 earnings that are applicable to the Federal vs state return. I would hope that TurboTax would have this answer for me.
The K-1 process was very labor intensive and confusing. Please improve the K-1 experience for the 2014 tax returns.
What's great about it: Carryover of prior year data
What's not so great: K-1 Submissions
