Getting an answer to my specific question was a problem as I stated in the cons. Would like to have the cost of State return included in Purchased price.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Never could find an answer to my specific question !!!!!
Turbo tax is not great for figuring taxes for retired public employees. In NYS personal contributions to an individuals public employee retirement plan are taxed when contribution is made, not when disbursed. NYS gets tax money in case retired employee moves out of state upon retirement. Employee contributions are not taxed by Federal Gov't, but distributions are, this encourages retirement savings. Distributions from public employee Sec. 457 accounts( similar to 401K's) are taxes at distribution by both Fed and NYS. Turbo tax makes no distinction between 457 distributions ad regular retirement funds. A portion of public employee disability pensions are now taxed by Fed, but not by NYS
What's great about it: have year to year records on computer
What's not so great: does not do state retirement income easily
I have been using Turbo Tax since 1987. It has always preformed well except for the 2010 issue that caused me problems not only with my own tax's but with those of three other persons. Otherwise never a problem. I recommend using them.
What's great about it: Easy to follow instructions, covers every angle and inflo flows to all required forms
What's not so great: Price
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
It looks like TurboTax finally provided better instructions about same-s*x married couples, but it was too late to be helpful for me and I had to input information for 3 separate tax returns. There should also be better information on HSAs and High Deductible Plans -- I suspect more people will have these plans in the future and the contribution limits (particularly if each spouse has a separate plan) and tax consequences aren't well explained.
Also it seems this review software is rejecting my use of the term "same-s*x." This is ridiculous and you should fix this feature.
What's great about it: Import feature
What's not so great: Explanations not clear
Pros: I had a baby, I moved, I bought or sold investments
