2013 Turbo Tax
on March 25, 2014

turbo tax deluxe was great - i had no stock buys/sells this year so the way deluxe is partitioned is excellent.
What's great about it: easy to use, asks the right questions
What's not so great: Can't hide REFUND or OWED amount for federal and state - it is always appearing in the upper left area of turbo tax
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Bad Year for Turbotax
on March 25, 2014
Posted by: Stanh3
I have been using MacIntax and Turbotax for many years. I found this year's system more confusing than in the past. It was a nightmare sorting out your meaning as to tax-exempt dividends and interest. In one place you say to put all tax exempt dividends under tax exempt interest; yet you have separate pages for each of them.
I am also amazed that your do not have some Ohio forms yet. They are presently available on line from the State of Ohio website for anyone who wants to download them.
What's great about it: pretty thorough
What's not so great: Very confusing when it comes to tax-free dividends and interest

This is a very easy program to use, and easy to go back and forth within the program. No gray areas, very black and white.
What's great about it: Instructions are very clear
What's not so great: Clicked to get email for sched A, but got it on update.

Long term user of Turbotax, now disillousioned
on March 25, 2014
Posted by: JeffChiangmai
I have been a Turbotax user since 2001 and have used it every year without any problems.
However, last year, my life situation changed dramatically as I moved overseas and married a foreign national. Because of this situation, last year I had to file an application for an ITIN for my wife and a declaration that my wife was to be treated as a US resident for tax purposes. This was understandably beyond what Turbotax could handle, and I had to file by mail anyway. I prepared my return with Turbotax but filed by mail. Complicated, but it still worked.
HOWEVER, this year, I should have been able to e-file. My wife now has an ITIN, and the IRS will receive e-filings from foreign addresses. However, Turbotax has a bug on form 2555 - if you use the foreign income exclusion for the spouse, but not for the taxpayer, Turbotax will error out saying that form 2555-T is not complete. If you delete the form, Turbotax will simply re-add it and give the same error. If you actually complete the form but show 0 income excluded, you will get a different error because the form should not be filled out at all.
This error prevented Turbotax from e-filing my return. And after looking around online, I found that the same bug has existed for several years and Intuit has not fixed it.
Between this bug and the fact that I had to pay about $12 more for Turbotax this year than last year, and I am a badly disillousioned Turbotax user.
If I use Turbotax again next year, it will be the minimal version of the product and I will plan on having to file by mail.
What's great about it: Strong basic interface and familiar feel
What's not so great: Bugs; does not handle complicated situations
Pros: I moved
