I had to go through the process of completing the Federal income tax forms two times. The initial Fed reviewed with Turbo Tax indicated I owed the Federal government over 9 thousand dollars. I went through the initial form two times and couldn't identify an error. Reviewing the information, I knew I couldn't owed the Federal Gov. over 9,000,00 so I completed a second Fed. Income tax form. I used the same information but received a very different outcome. The second outcome was a refund in access of 1,000 which was expected. What a hassle!!
We lived in two states last year and just retired. TurboTax walked us thru everything. You just have to be patient as you put in all the data and look up a few things you may not have in your records. Overall, in less than two hours I filed Federal and 2 state taxes. Having data carry over from the Federal statement sure saves a lot of time!
What's great about it: Walks you right thru everything for income and deductions!
What's not so great: Filing fees are not cheap
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
Turbotax saves me a lot of time for my family's taxes. If you have something unusual be careful and ask for help. Otherwise, it works really well and I am very happy to use it. Have been using it for years and years.
What's great about it: the carryforward information and ease of entry
What's not so great: the questions do not always get you to the right answer if it is a more unusual situation
I really need to see my answers to the questions from there previous year -- all of them. It would be nice to remember how I answered it so I don't have to guess or ask a tax professional for hep each time.
The Explain This sections are often too vague for the tax novice (or non-tax professionals). Use more layman's terms than legal or financial speak.
What's great about it: pretty organized and easy to complete information
What's not so great: Need to show answers to all questions from previous year. More detail in explanations.
