Each year it seems to get easier and easier with Turbo Tax. I have used the software many times and breeze through my taxes and my tax situation has only gotten more complicated.
What's great about it: It walked mr through everything and made life simple
What's not so great: When I accidently started down the wrong path of a form it completed the form even though it wasn't needed with nothing
The efficient downloads from investment houses and employers is great. I appreciate the extent of assistance on charitable donations.
I was somewhat irritated when a Federal Form still needed to be delivered and I was locked out of my personal return. I needed to download the return again and go over several categories that I had already done.
Everything worked fine until I clicked on "Transmit". Could not get it to transmit and the message suggested mailing my return which defeats the main advantage of Turbo Tax! Called support and got a list of things to try as they were aware of problem. Finally, as I removed the program to my Desktop, I tried one more time and it worked. Not sure why but it worked. Not very happy with TT as this type of problem came up several years ago, too.
What's great about it: Accuracy, everything covered
What's not so great: Software problem transmitting
I have used Turbo for many years and it continues to improve each year. My favorite feature is the running tally of tax refund or payment due. This year, my husband and I are semi-retired and I was able to play around with different amounts of IRA contributions for each of us checking the impact on refund/tax due to ascertain the contribution amount which would provide the greatest positive tax impact. We have a son in college and I also appreciate the explanatory detail provided with regard to education credits. Turbo Tax compares all options and identifies the most favorable credit to claim. Another helpful tool checks for all possible deductions then tells you whether you should itemize or take the standard deduction. I found a minor bug but did not see an easy way to notify Intuit of the issue so I waited for updates and revisited the section until it was fixed. I would also like to see more explanations from Intuit regarding alternative minimum taxes. I have only called Intuit a few times but they have always been very supportive and helpful. Overall I would recommend Turbo Tax to anyone -- and I do often!!! I think it is beneficial to complete our own taxes if they are not terribly complicated because the tool provides education so you understand what you are paying and why. Thanks Intuit!!
What's great about it: Running tally of refund or payment due
What's not so great: did not see a "report a problem" link handy
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
The program could not find my tax return from 2012, despite the fact that we used turbotax last year, and could find the PDF files. That was very frustrating. The most aggravating thing was when there was a charge for state efiling. I thought purchasing the deluxe edition covered that. It seems like a bit of false advertising to me.
What's great about it: Having calcuations completed for you, and walking through options
What's not so great: Couldn't find last year's return, charged for state efile
I love turbo tax and have used if for years! I got all 4 of my adult children to also use it. I don't like that I have to search where to put my foreign taxes paid on my state return (under taxes paid to other states) and it's also a little hard to find allowable employee expenses that have been transferred over from my federal return. I especially didn't like that it wouldn't let me e-file my federal return and apply a portion of my refund to next year's taxes and refund the rest to me. I could have done that if I mailed it myself. Now I have to mail in an estimate to the fed.
What's great about it: It does all the calculations & puts them where they belong on the forms.
What's not so great: Hides certain things & won't let you do things you can do on a mailed return.
As usual TT was an incredibly easy tax package to load and fill out. Works with Windows 8.1 - 64 bit, puts an icon on your desktop. They overdo it a little with the 'double checking', but at least it does not take long. I've used other programs but always end up coming back to TT.
