Simplifying a Difficult Task
on March 22, 2014
Posted by: Ilitot
Doing my taxes is one of those tasks that I dread every year. Having TurboTax to help makes the task easier to accomplish. The most difficult task for me is dealing with investments. I follow the questions, provide the answers, and fill in the blanks. When all is done and filed I am grateful for another year! Thank you TurboTax
What's great about it: TurboTax walks you through the process at your own pace.
What's not so great: TurboTax has to rely on me for the answers?!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
W-2 Section with a slight reference to 1049s later. Need a stronger message to leave the W-2 sections blank if you have a 1049R. The sales tax section asked to confirm the state and the percentage. There was no reference to a calculation in providing a figure for deductions. Overall I was extremely disappointed in the 2013 edition!
What's great about it: Average
What's not so great: More difficult than previous years and lack of good explanations
I believe this is the most complete and helpful tax preparation software available. The approach is basically answering a lot of questions, and it is very helpful to be able to import financial information from your payroll provider, investment bank and "It's Deductible" free software for tracking your donations throughout the year. Only downside is handling of 401K rollovers into an IRA at an investment bank - it is confusing and the screens make it look like it was additional income and you are going to be taxed on it - had to spend time making sure that the software treated it as a rollover. All-in-all, a good product, that I use every year.
What's great about it: Straightforward questions, lots of help opportunities, easy for a novice to use.
What's not so great: State e-file is expensive, should be free like the federal e-file.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have found that over the years (I've used from about 2008) TurboTax has become easier and easier to use. The guided process that takes you through your taxes is very complete and makes the confidence level of what you are filing very solid. It picks up all of my pertinent information from the previous year, yet allows me to easily and quickly make those changes that are necessary.
What's great about it: Very easy to follow step by step
What's not so great: It didn't send my refund as cash from my printer! (LOL)
