I have used Turbo Tax for about 12 years now. It is easy to use, takes you through your return step by step. I recommend Turbo Tax to anyone wanting to prepare their own taxes.
Turbotax does a good job of transferring most information from prior year tax returns into the current year. Why can it not see prior year "carryover" information? Turbotax asks if there is any prior year carryover. Why does it not know what carryovers there are from the prior year data it uses for other purposes?
What's great about it: Transfers all last year's data; easy to follow step-by-step
What's not so great: Prior year carryovers have to be entered by hand
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I'm going nuts trying to eliminate a period (.) after my middle initial in order to file my state return electronically! Other than that, everything is great.
What's great about it: I think it covers everything, and accurately
What's not so great: Can't get rid of a "period" after my middle initial in the State forms!
I used to be sick with annoyance when I had finally finished doing my income tax manually. That was long ago, and income tax law is now much more complex, but TurboTax has taken the strain out of the experience. Everything still has to be put in, but it's easy to see where and how. There's now no agonizing recalculating and recopying when I make a change or correction. Everything updates automatically and almost instantly.
What's great about it: Authoratative: I think TurboTax knows more about income tax law than any one human.
What's not so great: Need to be able to turn on password printing. I'm at home on my own computer. I need to see the password I'm typing.
