I have used this product for so long that I can't remember filing any other way. It gets easier each year. My tax situation is pretty basic and this product has worked great for me. Given the ambiguity of the IRS rules and the poor explanations of a complicated tax law, if your tax situation is complex this product may not be for you.
I have two problems with Turbo Tax. #1 is if a person is retired, why is not retirement income from SS or RRB reported at the very beginning behind the W2 area. This is confusing for this old dinosaur. #2 is that being retired from a railroad, it is my conception that I do not receive anything from Social Security and therefore do not have any entries. I made an error two years in a row by omitting the RRB-1099 because of the words Social Security on the section where this gets reported. I had to pay refund money back and late charges.
I have had my returns prepared by a tax professional for many years. However, the cost has steadily climbed for a rather simple married filing jointly return with limited deductions. Using Turbo Tax was a breeze. I will never go back to paying those ridicuously high fees for an outside professional. Turbo Tax methodically and accurately moves you through the process. The help sources are amazing.
What's great about it: Ease of use. Help information readily available
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I was going to use a professional accountant due to selling my home and moving this year. In the end I bought Turbo Tax again and decided to do it myself to see if everything I needed to do was covered. Needless to say, it was, so I saved myself some money in the long run and I'm confident in the end result. Thanks Turbo Tax !!
