Excellent Program, But

I have been happily using Turbo Tax for many years to file my simple W-2, interest, etc. income along with my wife's business in the home. Last year (2012 return) and this year (2013 return) TT indicated that we could save about $1,000 in state tax if we filed separately on separate State of Iowa returns. After the, in my opinion, extremely difficult process of separating our income and deductions on the state return it turns out that there was no saving over filing separately on a joint return. Again this year the program indicated the same. I did not attempt the separation again, but have the uncomfortable feeling that we are not getting the entire refund due. The program should automatically separate income and expenses if the "separate on a separate return" option is checked and should calculate the option accurately without having to manually create two IA returns.
What's great about it: Accurate, easy to follow interview
Again a simple process and expedited easily. Live in Cincinnati area and many individuals have been recently audited including many pastors. This fact influenced me to purchase the audit protection; which I hated to do just because of the substantiated IRS fraud in the region. Guess peace of mind is a good thing even though we are an exgtremely low risk for audit. Summry: keep it up!
What's great about it: Easy follow and guidance
What's not so great: Had to install twice as data transfer did not function 1st time
I started my taxes online this year, not planning on purchasing the desktop software. I got several steps into it, and discovered that they would no longer do small business stuff on the Deluxe version online. My "business" is tiny - hardly even reportable. I did NOT want to pay more to get the fancier version. Researched, and I had to go buy the software at the store for my computer. It took me nearly two hours to finally figure out how to transfer the info I had already started online and get it to work with the CD-Rom version. That is the reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Only con is the online version
I am 99% happy with Turbo Tax as it is offered, but I would like to see an option for easily entering the actual cost of using my vehicle for charitable use.
What's great about it: Walks you thru preparing return
What's not so great: does not have actual cost option for charitable mileage
Would not efile the Federal return. Error message indicated that an update was required, and to check for updates via the TurboTax menu. No updates were available.
This is not the first time I was not able to efile with TurboTax.
When I first started turbotax, it claimed I could not claim my youngest son as a dependent. I tried to go to the proper forms, worksheets, and info to find out why and to change it.. Could not find forms and the program always said "No forms" when I was at the dependent section of step-by-step. When checking for errors at the end of federal return, the program asked a question about my youngest son and only then could I change the form to include him as a dependent.
Being able to compare the previous year's numbers to those of this year as they were placed in columns side by side allowed me to complete my tax return quickly.
What's great about it: easily transfered previous year's tax data
What's not so great: unable to get to forms easily
Once again, our Turbo Tax experience was positive. The step-by-step approach helps us to identify and enter data. The review and check system gives added assurance that all was done correctly.
