Found out during validation step that I needed updates. Then needed to restart the program to record the fact that updates had been made. Otherwise it kept failing validation. It did not know that it had just done the updates. It did not tell me to restart to know whether I needed updates. Print feature on Imac not consistent with instructions. Search on loan origination fees did not take you to the right place in the form.
What's great about it: Quick once it worked
What's not so great: Problems with coordination of updates at the last step.
I have used Turbo Tax for years. It is easy to use and usually gets easier each year. I did have a couple of problems this year. I have spent many hours making sure my Quicken categories are associated with tax lines. When I started my return this year I could not find a way to import that data from Quicken. Also, (this sounds dumb but...) I spent two hours trying to determine what they meant be nondeductible IRA contributions. I finally Googled the definition and realized that it was simply contributions above the max. I like that I can complete our tax returns within about a two hour period, unless I am trying to find definitions like that.
What's great about it: Good instructions overall.
What's not so great: No Quicken import, some definitions hard to find.
The best part is it seems to keep getting better each year. I don't see how I could file my return without using TurboTax.
A few years back I had to overcome my concerns about efiling but went ahead, after a friend said they did it, and it wasn't a problem. I have been efiling ever since.
The summary reports that include past years are excellent for reviewing the current year's return and tax planning for the current calendar year.
What's great about it: Following the steps is logical and intuitive, skipping over topics that don't apply seems to go faster each year.
What's not so great: I wanted to apply my refund to next year's estimated payment, I think maybe it should appear earlier in the interview pr
The system transferred the documents but did not complete the required forms, dates where blank even though the agency did complete the information in the transfer documents. I had to enter the missing information.
What's great about it: Ease of use, quick and accurate
What's not so great: Need to improve transferring of information from institutions
I've used it for many years and it has been a fine and easy to use product.
But, this year there is a bug in the updater software that was reported online by many users for many months and seems to have been ignored or unnoticed by Turbo Tax. It certainly wasn't fixed and the online workarounds all failed.
Fortunately the support team via chat and phone enabled me to download the current versions of the needed software thus bypassing the updater.
Good second effort but a first time disappointment for Turbo Tax developers.
What's great about it: Chat support and phone support solved problems
What's not so great: Important bugs aren't caught and fixed quickly
