First time I ever needed a Form 982 and I had 2 items to put on the form. Turbo Tax doesn't work for more than 1 item on that form. It is the first thing I have ever seen that couldn't be done in Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Easy, leads you through each topic, several help sources
What's not so great: Found a circumstance Turbo Tax doesn't handle
This only affects people who are making IRA withdrawals and happened to have made non-deductible IRA contributions in the past. Turbotax correctly calculates the portion that is taxable to the IRS. The problem is that they then transfer that number (the federally-taxable portion) to the MA Form 1 instead of the whole withdrawal amount. MA never did allow deductions on the contributions, so they base their tax on the total withdrawal, not the federally-taxable portion. So if your federal return includes a Form 8606, TurboTax will be underreporting your income to MA. This also happened in 2012, but not in 2010.
What's great about it: easy to do
What's not so great: no good if Turbotax makes a mistake
I was pretty pleased with the service for federal returns, with good guidance through all incomes, expenses, and deductions. I would recommend for most people for their federal taxes if they are reasonably simple.
The state taxes is where I was incredibly dissapointed. I found the explanations lacking for when I needed to pay what quirky taxes, and the best explanations were generally a few sentences, and a reference to an external website. Then I would have to look up where I live and work and tax rates and credits and things I did not know about and the turbo tax state explanations and help were non existant.
I wanted suggestions for how to fill out various expected 2014 taxes that weren't present. I had to lookup my working municipality and various tax rates and credits between where I work and live.
What's the point of paying for Inuit's turbo tax if I have to do the legwork? I would not recommend turbo tax to any one in my state, because the product does not live up to my expectations, and therefore is a poor state value.
The rating was saved from being 1 star from good performance at the federal level.
i have been using this program for the past 23 years and this years program is by far the best interface and ease of use...I enjoyed going through the process steps and was able to get answers while staying in the field.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who want to get a better understanding of the tax process without a lot of stress.
I really feel like Turbo Tax is looking for every way possible to maximize my refund. They ask questions that, at times, I did not even know were possible for a deduction.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax makes it easy!
What's not so great: I still have to search for my paperwork!
After charging to efile an Illinois return, it failed to do so. It said that I had unusual withholding, but I didn't. This is clearly a bug. What galls me is that charged me first before doing the check that produced the error. Nothing changed in my return--they made a point of getting my credit card first.
What's great about it: Import W-2 and brokerage forms
Really don't like the way this thing ends - if you want to e-file the federal but not the state. It's a clunker. The state instruction don't list the mailing address and says you've e-filed....which i DIDN'T. It's a total pain figuring out how to even print the state form. Pretty mean spirited forcing e-filing on people who can ill afford it.
