When I contacted the 800 number, it was less than a 5 minute wait. The rep told me how to fix the problem and why it sometimes happens. It was quickly fixed. Very satisfying experience.
What's great about it: As always, easy to use and info from last year transferred easily
What's not so great: Had trouble e-filing at first
I have used TurboTax Deluxe from the time Intuit acquired Parson's tax software (Tax Edge?) years ago, and have observed TurboTax improve with every year. Although I've always prepared my own taxes -- beginnning long before consumer tax software became available -- and I'm comfortable with completing the IRS forms, I always use the TurboTax Interview method because it's simple and it ensures nothing is overlooked -- whether an income source or an allowed deduction. I have subscribed to the automatic renewal for years, to ensure that I get each year's package as soon as it's available and that I don't forget. The price of TurboTax Deluxe is a bargain: there's no doubt in my mind that it pays for itself each year by identifying deductions I might miss, and the peace of mind from knowing my taxes are filed correctly is a major bonus.
What's great about it: Straightforward, easy to use, and comprehensive.
What's not so great: Doesn't gather all of the documents and enter it for you. ;o)
Had a hard time entering my K-1 info for an oil/gas partnership. The K-1 I got from the company was probably the reason. But the help info in TurboTax was not useful.
I also wasn't exactly sure what info was sent to the IRS. When I looked at the "All official files..." in the Print section it seemed to have a lot of extraneous info ie filing instructions, qtrly estimate forms, etc. Do these really get sent to the IRS?
It is easy to use. Even for a non tax person like me. I have used it for 4 or 5 years now. Like that there is tech support if I have any questions. I have recommended it to others and they have tried it also.
I used Turbo Tax until about 9 years ago when I became a paid tax preparer. Turbo Tax was, by far, easier than the software we used at work and seemed just as accurate and less likely to miss deductions and credits. 3 years ago, I retired and went back to Turbo Tax. I have tried other available programs, but they just aren't as good, in my opinion.
What's great about it: Easy to Understand; Go Through at Your Own Speed and/or Understanding
What's not so great: Cost of efiling the state returns.
Once I got the hang of the program, it worked wonders! Early on in the process, I made some errors on some dividends and was confused on where to go and edit the information. Once I found the review tab at the top I was able to figure it out. I really like the easy-to-follow interface.
Easy to ask questions online, but I didn't always find the answer I was looking for.
What's great about it: Easy to follow
What's not so great: Sometimes it was difficult to find where to navigate back
