TurboTax Review

Could use a clearer explanation of a few terms regarding instructions.
What's great about it: Covers all the bases. Generally good 'help' explanations. I like the presentation and form views. Reasonable price.
What's not so great: Not much not to like.

2013 Tax Return by Turbotax
on March 17, 2014

Most all entries were easy to determine, but the automobile registration deduction determination was a pain. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find the right numbers and finally guessed that I couldn't deduct anything. Sure enough the program then told me I couldn't deduct anything because I live in Texas. It could have told me that before I went to all the trouble of trying to find the information myself!!. Also, the program made me determine what the local sales tax rate was when I think they could have calculated that number using my address.

What's great about it: Fairly simple and quick.
What's not so great: auto registration fee calc out of order and sales tax rate hard to determine

Every year you change your product and "improve" it - it gets harder to use. Thanks a lot!
What's great about it: I can enter data fairly easily
What's not so great: Instructions always lead to buying more products. Trying to print is a nightmare,

Very solid and easy to use. The short form for home office deduction was not easy to access or add
What's great about it: remembers all basic information from last year
What's not so great: hard to add home office deduction

When entering information from items donated to charitable organizations, I'm surprised TurboTax didn't prompt me for the address at that time, but waited and reported it much later as "needed information." By that time, I'd already put away the needed receipts. Also, I donated to the same organization #Goodwill# multiple times throughout the year, but had to enter each as a separate entry. Why not combine them as one and prompt for the donated items on the individual dates? Instead, TT treats the entries as separate organizations, which is confusing and redundant. I also felt the capital gains entries were unusually complicated and unclear. TT kept prompting me to upgrade to the Premier version, but I felt this was unnecessary as there were only two items to enter and I had all the needed records.
The worst aspect of this year's taxes were for education. I enrolled in college classes for 2013, but wound up withdrawing from them. Technically, I was a student, but since I did not take the classes, I was not. TT doesn't seem to make this distinction and the 1098-T forms were very confusing.
What's not so great: didn't prompt for charitable organization info at that time
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Best TurboTax Yet
on March 17, 2014

I've used TurboTax for years and this is the best product so far. Data entry is easy and returning to any data entry point or direct data entry on the forms has improved over past products. The only trouble was filing the federal return requiring an Identity Protection PIN provided by the IRS. The PIN was input during the data gathering portion of TurboTax but was not transferred to the Form 1040 for electronic filing -- resulting in a reject. I added the PIN to the Form 1040 and refiled. Either that solved the problem or TurboTax fixed the glitch, because the second filing was successful.
What's great about it: Simple step-by-step process with ease of review/changing inputs.
What's not so great: Initial problems filing electronically with Identity Protection PIN
