I continue to use TurboTax because its quick and very comprehensive. I have learned a great deal about my whole tax situation and it helps me plan for the next year and the future.
What's great about it: All the information, forms. etc. that you need are available.
What's not so great: It will take you some time to work your way through everything.
As an ordinary tax ignoramus, I have had a fairly easy time working my way through Turbotax and for a number of years now have had good results. I have made one suggestion for an improvement which they haven't listened to. And This year the electronic filing for my Federal return didn't work, and they couldn't fix that, and it was no fun. But in the end they gave good instructions for filing by mail.
When you consider the irrational complexity of our tax system, and especially if you think that most of us are paying more than our share while certain millionaires and especiallly billionaires are probably not paying their fair share, we can be grateful that the Turbotax people figured out a system for letting us comply with the law--even if we don't like it.
What's great about it: Oriented to the ordinary tax-ignoramus
What's not so great: Deals with all details of our crazy tax system
I found that a going back and performing a detailed review of my state return was iffy compared to self-guided tour offered for the federal return. How come? Like to be able to wizard or self-guided tour through the various steps of my state return just like the Federal. I eventually got to go back and review my state return, but it wasn't as easy as the Federal to do so.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have been using TurboTax for 11 years to file my taxes. This year, it automatically selected "Debit Card" for my refund option (Virginia). It never gives you the option within the software to select that you want it another way. I made the assumption that it would just transfer over from my federal preferences, BUT IT DOES NOT. TERRIBLE DESIGN!!!! Now my refund is delayed because I didn't catch it before filing. Federal is easy to e-file.
What's great about it: walks you through, federal can e-file up to 5 returns for free
What's not so great: State costs to e-file, direct deposit doesn't automatically flow into state
The 2012 version of this software left me highly disappointed. I have used Turbo Tax for the past decade, and have never experienced the inaccuracies found in this version. My forms from last year did not port over correctly, to the point of having to re-enter the information myself, which initially led to my return being rejected by the IRS. The navigation of the software is fine, provided you are completing it in ones go, otherwise be prepared for the tedium of having to re-navigate the entire section to return to where you left off. Overall, my taxes got filed; but for the first time using this program I find myself regretting the purchase of an overpriced program. The frustration of using this program frequently left me considering abandoning the cause and consulting a CPA.
What's great about it: Able to complete taxes
What's not so great: Software used to include state refund (deluxe suite), incorrect porting of last years information, return rejected
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Its a good product overall but i didn't like the fact that i paid for the product at the time of purchase and when I wanted to file my State i was getting charged again! So at the end I spent the same as when i take them to a tax service.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
