Really good, but not perfect

I bought this MFC to replace an HP 2840 I had come to hate (I also have a Xerox Colorqube) for high-speed color printing. I have two other Brother lasers that I think are great printers. This one only rates a nearly great. Two things keep it from being a five-star printer: 1) few printers live up to their rated speeds, but this one is really slow getting the first page out--if you do a lot of single-page printing, you're going to be a little frustrated; 2) there is no feed tray for 11x17 paper--you have to manually hold it up to a slot in the back of the printer until it has been pulled sufficiently far into the printer to prevent it from falling out or getting misaligned. It amazes me that the engineers couldn't figure out some way to make this process easier. Other than these two minor caveats, it is a terrific value.

I am very pleased with the machine. It does me a great job and very versatile. Did have a minor problem, but Brother was able and prompt to get the problem taking care.

Complete Failure

I received my MFC-J6920DW Printer/copier/Fax Nov. 2013 It was easy to setup. It was for home use and had little use other than PDFs and a few scanned pages. After seven months, While printing an image from a NASA site the screen indicated a paper jam. It appeared that I had the jam cleared but would not allow printing. The inside of the print area was wet with ink. I was able to take it in to a local Brother repair center. After two and one-half months they were unable to fix the problem with new parts and applied for a replacement. It came with no warranty but a special page to clear jams. The new machine was placed in my front seat. No box. No cover. I have large ink cartridges I purchased for this machine and feel it was a complete waste of time and money. I have not used the second machine.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I have had several Brother printers which have been great, but this particular product has been more problematic. The first issue was with a bad print head. In the first couple of weeks I had the machine the magenta printer suddenly simply quit. Tech support had me go through a special cleaning cycle to no avail. But the issue I had was the fact that Brother twice shipped me replacement ink sets (because you use a LOT of ink to do those cleanings) and probably would have sent a third set if I didn't protest that it ought to be quite clear after a dozen cleanings that doing more would not fix the problem. At that point it was decided to replace the printer. That process went smoothly and the new printer is fine. I'm also a little put out that there doesn't seem to be a way to improve print quality. Colors look weak overall and nothing in my settings will seem to improve that. Lastly, this machine WILL NOT DUPLEX with the Mac driver at 8.5 x 14 legal size settings. This is an issue with the driver, not the machine. It will duplex legal size from a PC without any issue. It duplexes all letter and ledger sizes with no problem. It seems as though this would be a simple fix, but Brother says the problem is with the CUPS driver, which they do not have any control of. I say that's nonsense. Surely Brother has enough programmers to write a Mac driver for their machines. Saying it is someone else's problem is not a good answer. There must be hundreds of Mac users who cannot duplex legal size paper and that seems inexcusable.

This product is perfect for my use at work and at home. Print and scan quality is great. the auto loader and ability to scan both sides of a document at the same time is also great and cut scanning time by more than half when you consider the time it takes to reload a document to scan the 2nd side.
The only issue that I have had to work through is the difficulty removing small documents that get jammed in the auto loader.
The space between the auto loaders input tray and the lower level output tray is a little small for my normal size male hands and it does not provide a way to separate the input tray from the lower output tray.

One thing I wish it can do is to be able to set in B&W print mode all the time ( as it is now, I always have to change the print program each time to B&W, otherwise it automatically print in colors).

Best all-in-one printer I've ever used

I previously had an HP AIO and widebed printer so I could do print outs on both letter and ledger sized paper. It took up a lot of room. I did research online to find a single printer that could do all that and found the MFC-J6920DW to be well rated. It works so much better than my old printers, particularly on scanning. The way the 11x17 ledger sized paper mounts to minimize the footprint is brilliant. It is also quieter and cheaper. I was hesitant to try another brand of printer initially but I'm glad I did.
