This machine uses a lot of ink! It pulls more than one sheet of paper 8 out of 10 times! You cannot us both trays when making copies or printing! When you need to print on thicker paper you have to feed it one at a time.

Was looking for a versatile printer to do 11x17 plots for my architectural home office. Doing the printing here saves many visits to local Fed Ex and provides quick turnaround for my commercial and residential clients.

Disappointing

I was very disappointed in its paper handling abilities. An envelope almost always jams in the manual feed. The printer will not print a complete envelope-it cuts off the return address. When I tried to print a check from the manual feed, the machine fed the check through and then printed the check on a paper from the tray. This inability to use the manual feed is a big negative for me. On the plus side-very easy to set up & install via wifi. Scanning, faxing & copying were all easy to set up & use. Print quality is not great, either.

Bought the J6920DW to replace a 6490CW that was starting to malfunction. The new one seems to use more cheap plastic in its overall design, it seems flimsier than the 6490.
I need the 11x17 capability for both printing and scanning, the automatic feeder, and the dual paper trays so I can keep one loaded with letter size paper and one with ledger size. This machine can do all that, but has some flaws. It's touted as a "space saver" because the paper trays load horizontally; the problem is that once you want to actually use it, the space saving feature doesn't matter. You have to pull out a flimsy, narrow plastic extension from the upper paper tray to catch the print output. You also have to adjust the paper trays in a way that makes them extend out another 6-1/2 inches. In my case, the lower tray holds the ledger size paper (so it sticks out all the time), and the upper tray holds letter size paper horizontally; the upper tray must be extended so as to catch the ledger size output pages to keep them from spilling onto the floor.
Then there's the print quality, which is only fair (B&W is a little "muddy," and color printing is poor); plus on the ledger size paper, there are waves and jumps in the print near the edges of the paper. The first time I saw them, I actually checked the file to see if there was a problem there with the typeface, but no, it was just the bad printer quality.
Plus, it's the noisiest machine I've ever used, annoyingly so.
I'm about to pack it up and return it. I would rather pay a little bit more and have better quality than hit the lower price point and have the cheap, noisy, machine with mediocre print quality.

BROTHER has really gone downhill :(

I had always had Brother printers in the past and loved them. They lasted forever, the ink was reasonable, the print, fax and scan quality was great. When my old Brother finally died after 8yrs, I tried an EPSON that had a 1yr warranty. The EPSON would not pwr on after a yr. Since the EPSON was out of warranty, I decided to spend the extra money and go back to a Brother. That said, I purchased the MFC-J6920DW since it had all of the features I needed for work and I "thought" I would be purchasing the same Brother quality I had had in my previous Brother printers. BUT I was extremely disappointed!! The printer would NOT power on after only 6 mos!! That is frustrating enough but when I contacted Brother, they told me they would send me a REFURBISHED unit to replace it. I have not even finished paying this one off and they want to replace a 6mos old NEW unit with one of their RETURNED USED, HOPEFULLY FIXED units?! I would have saved money and bought a refurbished unit if that was what I wanted!! When I told them part of my reason for buying Brother was for the 2yr warranty, they said that they only replace with a new within the first 90 days. Needless to say, that is NOT acceptable! [Note - after an hour of disputing with them they agreed to send me a new (base only) unit] I just thought I would let everyone know that their TWO year warranty is not a full legit warranty. In addition to the unit not powering on, the print quality of this unit is VERY faded and the colors are NOT true colors (as you see on your computer screen). I have to print in BEST to get even close to what my old brother printed in draft (I would only print in draft in my old brother except for pictures). I would NOT recommend this printer for pictures at all. The unit also won't "find" my computer to scan to and the feeder pulls the papers in cockeyed, So my overall experience with this printer has been EXTREMELY disappointing and frustrating. Brother has really lowered their quality standards significantly. :/

Basic Flaws Make This Printer Poor
on December 10, 2014

I could never get the machine to work correctly.
There are not any circumstances under which I can recommend someone buy this printer. It has so many flaws, it is hard to know where to start. Just to be fair, I have purchased over 50 printers in my lifetime. Laser, ink jet, for work, for home, for photop quality printing. As a marketing person, I often have to support them as well.
The printer has problem grabbing paper from the main paper tray 1. Not 20 pound paper but nearly ANYTHING else. Glossy, semi-gloss, anything heavier. Nope, jam, jam, jam.
Try the straight feed? Nope. Jam jam jam. Sometimes it took 30 tries to get it to grab a single piece of paper, IF it worked the 30th time.
It likes to grab multiple sheets from paper tray 1 also, especially when loaded with photo paper. So it prints on a fraction of the fiorst and the remainder on the rest.
PRINT QUALITY in normal print (on 20 lb paper) shows line bands. Pretty bad. Nothing cleans them up, even multiple head cleanings.
WIFI QUIT after just a month and won;t work any more. So it;s hard wrired despite being purchased to be a wireless printer.
Thanks Brother for a great paperweight. I plan to use it as a trade in for the next printer I buy as soon as I can...which will NOT be a Brother printer.

I have been in business 17 years and this is by far the worst printer I have ever owned. Can't print thick paper, doesn't print envelopes without grabbing several at a time, I must print checks one at a time in the manual feed, if put in the tray will usually grab 2 at a time at some point when printing 20 or so checks, manual feed doesn't work 1/2 the time and must redo. I am constantly having problems and finding things it won't do properly. I really hate this machine. I have called customer service but they were no help, you can't fix a machine that was engineered poorly. I just missed the 30 day cut off to return this printer and have purchased bulk cartridges so I am stuck with it. I will buy a Cannon when I use up the cartridges. Will never buy another Brother product.

poor print quality

This machine has lots of great features. It was pretty easy to set up, but the print quality is very poor. Even when you set it on 'best' it is no better. The lines of my drawings are light and sketchy.
