AVOID this fridge due to four major design flaws

We have had this refrigerator for about five months. It looks great and offered what I considered good features for the money. There are, however, four major design flaws you need to be aware of:
1) Ice maker is absolute junk and suffers from a fatal design flaw. Basically, water fills a plastic tray and then "twists" itself to drop the ice. This causes the ice tray to contort over time, at which point water will start spilling all over the inside of your freezer. We had a tech come out and replace the ice maker and it still did the exact same thing. He said it was a major design flaw that many people experience.
2) As many others have noted, the "ICE TYPE" design is totally confusing to any guests you have over. It's not at all intuitive when you walk up to the fridge that you need to press "ICE TYPE" if you simply want to get a glass of water. Seriously? Who thought that was a good idea.
3) Even on the "cube" setting, small bits of ice will spray out of the ice cute and all over your floor, every single time you press the level for ice. This is another design flaw and just read the reviews to see how many other people experience the same thing.
4) As others have mentioned, the internal LED lighting is energy efficient, but makes for VERY dim lighting. This is even worse if you plan to use the top shelf of the refrigerator.
In sum, we REALLY wanted to like this fridge, but we simply cannot recommend it based on these four major design flaws. AVOID this refrigerator if these things would bother you as they do us. We really regret our purchase.
Pros: ice maker, lighting, design flaws, beauty

I am not sure what "an intuitive LED display" means but it does not have a backlight to be able to see the symbols or read any words that need to be selected. Had to read the instruction book to get familar with the controls. Guests can not operate ice and water selections without asking how to do it.

I've had my new refrigerator for a couple of weeks now; so far I really like everything about it except for one thing. The lock-out control for the digital control pad not only locks out the freezer and refrigerator temperature controls, but it also locks out the ice and water dispenser. I think this is a design flaw; I would like to lock out the temperature controls so they do not get accidentally adjusted, but at the same time, I would like the ice and water dispenser to function. We have to hold the lock button down for three seconds every time prior to getting ice or water, and then again for three seconds to re-lock it. This is a nuisance.
Pros: Performance, Style/Design, easy to use, Quality

Good looking and wonderful features

While I have only had this refrigerator for 3 months I am very happy with this purchase. The quality of construction is much better than a famous brand I looked at before finding this one. The cost was about the same but the other brand had handles that could actually be squeezed almost together. (side by side also) Very cheap plastic. The LG unit is very sturdy and very quiet running. It produces sufficient ice for a family of four, and we use a lot of ice. The light is very pleasant when opening the door. Also I notice that the finish seems to resist finger prints. When they are left they are are easily wiped off with no streaking. Love this refrigerator and the LG brand!!!
Pros: Performance, Features/Settings, Quality

Great features, excellent value!

After trying and returning three(!) different Sears Elite models and one Whirpool, we were relieved to come across this LG model, which more than met our expectations - in appearance, features and performance.
The only minor drawback I could find are the rather plain white plastic door bins, wheras I would've preferred a much nicer clear plastic ones often found on other models.

Great refridgerator from a trusted company

We looked at ALOT of refridgerators before buying this one. We have had it over a month now and love it. It has alot of room and the ice maker is great, and being energy star is a plus. LG is a brand we trust as we also have the LG steam washer and dryer and have had no problems with them for 5 years now. LG is a brand we TRUST!!

Very nice, but a couple design flaws

I bought this refrigerator around July of 2013, so I've had it for a year now. First the positive: Temperature in both sides, freezer and refrigerator seems very stable and consistent. I prefer the side-by-side design over the new (old) design with the freezer on the bottom as it's much easier to find things and organize them. The stainless steel finish is very good in not showing fingerprints, as long as you maintain the surface with stainless steel wipes which also makes it a lot easier to clean sticky stuff off of it. The lighting inside is fantastic with one caveat, the very bottom product compartment has no light in it at all. I often forget to use it, or even notice it because it's so much darker than the rest of the compartments and shelves.
The most annoying thing about this refrigerator is the water/ice dispenser. Regular sized glasses don't catch all the ice (crushed) falling from the dispenser. No matter how I position the glass, inevitably many pieces hit the floor. They're hard to see so some end up melting into water which gets stepped in, and thus causes the floor to get dirty faster, especially directly in front of the frige. Even a very wide mouth cup can't seem to catch all the crushed ice pieces because you can't hold the cub high enough to eliminate the issue.
Another design issue with the ice/water dispenser is that there doesn't seem to be any way to set the light to stay on longer or just stay on, like at night time. So when I want to get water or ice, I have to turn on the overhead lights to see what I'm doing. I hate that when I happen to get up early or in the middle of the night. I wish the light just came on when a glass is inserted into the space and delayed a bit before turning off.
The user control panel on the ice/water dispenser is not very intuitive. When ever I have guests over, I always have to demonstrate the controls to them, nobody can ever just figure it out. It appears to many that you would press the lighted icon for a function, but you actually press the words "Ice Type" to select between cubed ice, water, or crushed ice. I do like the size of the opening, I can fit a full size pitcher in it though the water flow rate is a little slow for filling up a pitcher.
These few design issues could be very easily made more user friendly by LG, but I would be happy if they could rectify the ice dispensing on my floor with a retrofitted solution. I won't hold my breath on that one.
The shelves inside are very nice. Easily removed for cleaning or reconfiguration. And the air seems to flow well throughout the unit.
Dimensions: The dimensions of the unit do not account for bowing of the sidewalls which is at least an inch (1"). If, like me you are replacing a much older refrigerator and cut the tolerance close, you may be in for a rude awakening. I think manufacturers recommend a certain clearance but from what I've seen, most of us don't do that. I ended up having to cut 1/2" off a counter top, and another 1/4" off the side of a pantry cabinet to get this thing in the space where my old refrigerator was even though the dimensions were the same according to LG's information and my measurement of my old frige. I was only willing to do so because I anticipate replacing my cabinets in the future. Otherwise, I would have returned the unit.
Overall, I am very pleased with this refrigerator. It looks great, seems to run perfectly after only a year, but it's very quiet and efficient.

We shopped around for the most fridge for our buck. the buck stopped on the LG. We loved the price the look and the features. Upon delivery and unpacking they found the fridge had been scratched. Not only did they return it at no charge to us but also let us use the scratched fridge till our new one came in!! Awesome service even though it was damaged, now we have our new one and love it!! We will definitely purchase LG in the future, and recommend to all of our friends!
