This printer is wonderful. I got it quickly and had no problems setting it up even though I usually have my husband or kids deal with electronics. It was super easy to use, even printing directly from the ipad. Had to download something to have it print from our cell phones, but that was easy too. it prints quickly and was a great deal.

Setup is difficult. I had a tech friend (who setup my business network) to set it up to network he knows exactly what is what. Took him an hour. Used this for 14 days. Performance is slow, but so far so good. Hoping the software is not going to screw up.
Don't like the design of the vertical control panel. Have to tilt it out to operate and without locking mechanism behind to support. Sheet feeder is very SLoooooW and horizontal feeding is not the greatest (have to make sure docs are pushed on the way in) Hard to remove scanned documents from top lid. No cover for paper tray. Copying quality is awesome. Fax is fast especially faxing directly from computer. Software is very limited. Not recommend for high volume user.

Just bought the M1217nfw. I also just bought an iMac 27inch w Lion 10.7, I also own another desktop pc, laptop pc, iphone and ipad2. I bought printer for its flatbed design, scanning, faxing and airprint. I was very worried that seamless, wireless setup was going to be a nightmare with these devices and because of past reviews on Lion 10.7 Mac setup. Out of the box, there was no instructions on anything other than basic USB setup. However, I made a call to HP support and may have gotten the best phone support that I have ever had. Ruby in Canada was awesome. She setup my Mac, desktop pc, laptop pc, e-print, airprint, scanning and faxing for me, step by step. She even called back to follow up and make sure my phone line was faxing well (initial call made from my single home line). The process took 2 hours but well worth it and I can't say enough about the support I got. After everything has been set up, it all works great. Only 2 wires out of my printer....power and fax line. Highly recommend the unit because of its functions and the support I got.

I have installed and and have been using the M1217nfw for a couple of weeks. The other reviews are pretty accurate. It is a solid printer with good software so far as I can tell. It is the noisiest printer (during the printing of a page) that I have every owned. I love the AirPrint feature that, after the firmware update, works very nicely. HP ePrint is also available, but thus far I have not needed it as I have installed the printer driver on the other printers in our network.
I like HP products and this is no exception. I would like to see instructions on streamlining the firmware update process. I was very unsure if the full software suite on the HP site also upgraded the firmware and/or if I needed to install the firmware update first. Secondly, installing the driver on multiple computers was confusing as I have some Vista and some Win7 computers and I was supposed to install both originally so that other printers on the network could copy the correct driver. This process is very confusing so I just searched for the printer on the network via its IP address and installed a driver from the Windows Update online. This works great, although the rest of the software suite resides only on the Office computer. Better documentation on network sharing would be helpful as I am pretty good at this stuff, but there was no help anywhere in the documentation. Its a networked printer, isn't it? How do you properly install it accross a network? That's all. Now that it's running. All is pretty cool.

Difficult setup for Mac but nice printer
on December 23, 2011

I just bought a new MacBook Air OS X Lion, and wanted to buy a wireless All-in One to use for my small business. My old printer is a HP 3050 and has been a great workhorse, so I decided to stay with HP. I read other reviews that Macs are difficult to set up, and these reviews are totally true. After making many failed attempts, I finally called tech support and after about an hour and a half we managed to get everything set up and it's working great. However, I am disappointed with the lightweight plastic components it's made of - it is not what I expected from HP - so I am unsure how it will hold up with the amount of use I will be giving it. Also, it makes a loud "clunking" noise when printing, which concerns me. The support person said that's just the noise it makes. We'll see. Overall I'm quite pleased with the print quality and ease of use.

Works with Linux
on December 24, 2011

It's difficult to find a printer that works well with Linux. I wanted a monochrome laser all-in-one and looked at Samsung, Brother, and Canon as well as HP; however, according to my research, only HP appeared to be reasonably easy to get working with Linux.
It did take a little work, but the M1217nfw does work well with Ubuntu 11.10 after using hpsetup to install a plugin it requires. Scanning, printing, and wireless (though the latter is more a function of what router you have) all work well. I was able to set it up completely using the wireless connection.
I like the standby feature. It wakes up quickly, but I print/scan fairly infrequently, so I tend to shut it off for more power savings between uses. Even then, it only takes about 20 seconds to re-establish a wireless connection and be ready to go.
The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is a completely enclosed letter-size paper tray. The one it has seems like a dust magnet to me, so I usually take out the paper and close the door when I won't be using it for a while.

Not as good as they used to be

This HP is not as good as previous units. Its software capability brings it up to date but the quality of the unit if far from what it used to be. It feels like you are going to break it when you push the buttons. Not a high end model, so I guess you get what you pay for. It does the job.

Almost a perfect Printer

I am reviewing components for a Cloud based office configuration. A stand-alone network printer/scanner/copier/fax is a component of that scenario with Chromebooks. The printer is fine, the fax is fine, copier is fine, but setup, scanner and firmware updates requires a Windows PC. Many advertised features are not even implemented until a firmware update is performed. These limitations are by no means clear in the product description, and pre-sales assistants are not well informed. After the firmware update, e-printing is available, but scanning still requires a Windows pc. It is an almost complete product, probably rushed to market prior to being ready to go to work. I will have to go t another mfg to solve my issue.
