Small but Mighty

I purchased this microwave to replace the same model I had purchased fifteen years ago. It is shallow in depth and so sits nicely on a shelf below a wall cabinet. It is powerful enough to do what I need it to do -- cook a frozen item, reheat leftovers or warm up my coffee.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Amazingly quiet!

I bought this model because it was the approximate size of the last GE microwave I installed under my kitchen cabinet, and the most notable improvement is the fact that this new model is amazingly quiet. My last GE microwave lasted me a number of years, and would probably still be functioning if an over zealous cleaning service had no shorted out part of the control panel. Since that oven was several years old, we opted to buy a new one rather than replace the control panel. We limped along for months with the defective controls, but when I finally took the time to install the new one, I was glad I did, because it is so quiet. If this model is anything like the first, I expect it to last quit a long time, because the old one is still functioning despite the fact that the lower numerals on the control panel are unusable. Bravo to GE for the reliability of their appliances.

We have a very tight space to install a microwave and this one fit nicely. It has all the basic features that we wanted plus some nice to have extras!

Overpriced

I bought this because it is the only model microwave oven that fits in the space built into my kitchen cabinets (the depth of the opening is the issue). It is the second PEM31 I needed buy to replace a failed GE JEM31 series (now discontinued) that I liked a lot (5 stars). The PEM31 has the same exterior dimensions as the JEM31, but has fewer features, a smaller oven cavity, and lower quality. My first PEM31 failed after only a few years of moderate use. In spite of being a manufacturing cost reduced version of the JEM31, it is significantly higher in price. If I had another option that would fit in the available space, I would have bought it. Sadly, that is not an option.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I bought this microwave two months ago in anticipation of downsizing to a smaller home. I have been using it since it was purchased and I find it works very well for warming foods. it is unfortunate that the keypad is not backlit---that would make it 5 stars.

We had an under the counter GE for 38 years. It began zapping underneath. This a replacement. It's great.
