Cheap Replacement for older Spacemaker II

Build quality not even close to the GE Spacemaker II being replaced, that lasted well over twenty years. The fit kit was so flimsy that even though boxed very well in Styrofoam, arrived deformed an had to be hammered back into shape. The fit kit in the unopened box was a different size than printed on the box. I ordered 27" and received a 30" unit. Unlike the fit kit grille with our older unit, which nicely screwed to the fit kit frame, this grille had to be diagonally screwed to the face of our solid cherry cabinets, which leaves them marred forever should we change to some other unit in the future. The new grill vents against the cabinets rather than out the front with older unit. The grille is cheaply made yet costs nearly 40% of the cost of the microwave itself. The microwave unit is also a disappointment. Everything is cheaply made compared to the original, touch screen, door, etc. The mechanical opening latch is terrible. It has to be pressed at just the right angle to get the door to open. Even with a conscious effort to open the door with the best technique, it often requires more than one, sometimes more than two attempts. The door moves up an down and at time has to be repositioned to close properly. I guess GE knows about this because there is a screed indication that appears when not closed properly. The specified power of the unity is about 40% less than the original, but food and liquids seem to heat up nearly as fast as the old unit. My suspicion is that there is reduced copper an iron content in the high power electrical components and that will result in dramatically reduced service life. We were told by the dealer to expect no more that five or so years, not twenty or so we enjoyed with our old unit. I understand that the Governments never ending quest to reduce power consumption plays into why this unit is made so cheaply. I have no doubt that my cost of ownership is going to be far greater than with the last GE purchase no matter how much electricity we save. We have already experienced the cost of shorter term replacements with other appliances. They cost more, last for far shorter a time, and perform poorer than older products. It is sad to see the GE brand diminished after years of loyalty throughout our family. If you need a slimline, I believe this is the only choice. Thanks to GE for at least standing behind us who need a replacement units.

Expensive Dents and Door Rattle

Returned first oven for reasons of dented cabinet in two places. Second oven has a rattling noise in the door during use. Quality control doesn't seem to exist on these GE Microwaves but should given the cost of this unit.

Fits Perfectly & Does the Job!

We recently had our kitchen remodeled and needed a new microwave to fit in the space provided for the microwave. We had a heck of a time finding one we liked and FINALLY Hubby found this one! It works as great as our past GE over the range just smaller which is what we needed!
