Bad build quality

We bought this appliance as part of our whole kitchen renovation. We went for the most expensive brand and device available, wanting to get the best reliability and looks. While this appliance looks pretty good in the kitchen, it has failed TWICE in the last 3 months. Each time it was a different electrical fault - once a wire burning out and once a connector to a thermal switch burning out (and producing acrid fumes). This points to poor build quality.
Reliability is really important in appliances like microwaves, dishwashers etc. When they fail, it throws the whole daily cycle astray and repairing or replacing them is a real pain. Since we make decor choices around the appliances, it is difficult to fit in another brand. So it is not just the cost of the appliance that is at stake. To tide us over I had to bring out my 15 year old Samsung microwave from storage each time the GE microwave failed. That one works fine even today, after four coast to coast moves!
GE has been prompt in getting the appliance repaired, I do give them credit for that. And being in warranty, they did not charge anything. So kudos on that front too.
However I would have preferred having a fault-less performance on such a new appliance.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

All good except one thing

Purchased in June 2014 - Works great, powerful, lots of features, however, I don't like the fact that your fingerprints show on the key pad after pressing the touch pad.

REPLACEMENT UNIT

Had to replace a GE Model #JE1640WB001 and TRIM KIT that lasted 12 years. Needed a counter-top model and a new TRIM KIT to fit the built-in compartment. GE Model #PEB7226DF1WW and TRIM KIT JX7227DFWW was recommended. Had to increase the width cut-out an additional 1 1/2 inches.

Great microwave. Sleek look. Cooks great. Only thing did not come in slate to match the rest of my appliances so went with this one to match the chrome accents on the slate.

Love This Microwave!

We purchased this microwave to install over our wall oven. We also bought the trim kit as well so that the unit looks built-in. The installation was not difficult. GE's products are something to write home about!
