RX 10 Thoroughly Tested

After 5 months use on several assignments I have come to a fairly confident conclusion as follows: Cons first: This is a motion picture camera first and foremost. The still image autofocus is nearly useless except for static subjects. Anything at the long end moving faster than a snail is hopelessly blurry until it stops moving or the camera hits a lucky spot. Conversely strange is the MOVIE mode autofocus is quite good- responding quickly to moving objects much better than many video camcorders I've used. The slow zoom is a real hassle even when you don't need to zoom for the composition but want to focus-check it takes forever to extend all the way- even in the step mode. Don't plan on zooming at a sporting event. The color settings (WB) for stills are oddly MUCH yellower than the movie mode. Lastly the RAW Image Converter is so slow it's useless. I can't wait til Adobe comes up with the update for Camera Raw for this camera. NOW THE PROS- It feels very comfortable and secure in your hand. Top-notch image stabilization, super, super sharp Ziess lens has excellent sharpness even for macro (though the aperture is a little less than a true 2.8 and looks to be about a 3.2 or so but still very useful across this wide zoom range), amazing AWB actually corrects the color even as review comes up. Video quality is superb and rivals cameras costing 3 times as much, very low noise in poor lighting conditions and as always with Sony's images the color is very clean, natural and convincing. Conclusion: Despite the still image focusing drawbacks it's still an awesome camera for thoughtful studio work, scenics, travel, portraits and is a very useful piece of equipment which will always be my constant companion!

Great Product, Poor Marketing

This camera delivers great pictures, awesome zoom, true color, slick handling, weather resistance and head-turning looks. In other words, the RX10 does not disappoint. However, it's overloaded with stuff that many of us don't care for:
- poorly written paper manual - NFC - wireless - tilting display - in-camera charging plus an accessory to slide a wire through it. ??? Really, the only way to charge is with the so-called "optional" charger people. A must-have - mediocre Sony software
Together these extras probably add 200 grams and 400 bucks to the cost. Why can't Sony emulate Toyota, offer a base version and an LE version? But if they must take that 10% tip then please, at least throw in the leather case and optional charger.
Speaking of tips, the fastest, best way to offload photos to your computer is to slide the SD card out, into the PC, cut and paste.
Postscript: Don't compare with the RX100, the RX10 is an entirely different animal.

The camera is awesome. I would have scored it 5 stars if it had an 180 - Twisting LCD. This camera would be sweet if it had that feature. I hope you guys fabricate a camera with those characteristics. Cheers.

Mediocre image quality

This camera has lackluster image quality for the price. The lens and other features are above average and the physical camera is a thing of beauty.

We certainly appreciate the feedback. Hope you're enoying your DSCRX10!
I normally never write reviews but the engineers need to be regonized for a job well done. from ergonomics to user interface every thing seems to be just right, if I had one complaint I would've wanted a wider angle lens. This is my personal preference some may want longer. Maybe adapters in the future? Finally I know purchasing a camera could be pretty overwhelming with so many options. I know there's reviews out there. But the combination of lens and 1 inch censor is just about right for photos and videos. If you're more interested in the videos I would look at Sony's 4k options
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great do everything camera.

I have a full frame DSLR, but due to its size it's cumbersome to bring along for the day. The RX10 is perfectly sized and equipped to be a "take everywhere" camera. It's photos and videos are amazing. Only thing, is that it lacks video remote control when hooked up to Sony's Play Memories WiFi remote software. If you're going to make a camera WiFi equipped, it should allow you to control the video as well as the photo function. This camera's video is excellent, but it's limited without being able to be accessed via the camera's WiFi.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hi CNJPHOTO, We do appreciate providing us these feed backs for the betterment of our product. We will pass this to the proper department. Thank you for your time and thanks for choosing Sony.
so far I've taken about 4500 pictures. Pros: everything. What I like especially is the wifi feature. I take a few pictures every day showing the weather in our area. I then post the pictures on my web page which is on the upstairs computer. Removing the stick is a pain in the neck. So I appreciate that I can leave the camera downstairs, tell it to transmit the new (!!, another nice feature) pictures, and when I'm at the computer the pictures are already there. Cons: I wish it had GPS which a number of cheaper cameras have
