Three Steps Forward, Three Steps Back

When my 8500 all-in-one failed prematurely, I had to move on to the 8600. In several ways, it's a nice machine -- quieter during operation and in its idle state, and the "ink drying" time is shorter when making 2-sided copies. I also like the bigger capacity of the upper paper tray. However, the 8600 lacks the separate keypad and button commands of the 8500, offering only a touch screen. This omission is a problem if you don't have long-distance service on your fax line -- I used to be able to have Speed-Dial pre-sets for my calling card, its pin, and then individual fax numbers (or I could manually dial in a new number AFTER using buttons to access the two calling card speed-dials). (The workaround is to plug a extension phone into the second phone jack -- functional, but a lot more cumbersome.) The lack of a keypad means that I can't type in a specific size when enlarging or reducing a copy (72%, 136%, etc.) -- I have to hold the "up" or "down" arrow down as it scrolls through each number. Also, the 8600 does a miserable job of feeding photo paper, as many other customers have commented -- this impaired function is a real concern. (I am finding that I can use a sacrificial piece of HP brochure paper to "prime the pump," and then the printer will accept photo paper for a while.)

I use an HP MFC-J6710DW intensivley at work (offshore). The Pro 8600-N911n has virtually all of the same features (only a smaller scan bed) at less than half the cost.

Great product, does all that it says and more. Highly recommended to the Home Based Business who needs to be able to present themselves as a legitimate one. Provides marketing tools that are invaluable... This Printer does ROCK.

I have used numerous HP printers over the years. The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium has the best feature set and performance of any of these printers. Some of the key features that caught my eye are support of either wireless or ethernet connectivity, support for legal sized documents, document feeder that also supports legal size documents, and good fax support. I have the unit connected to my network using the ethernet connection. I have the phone line connected to the unit and a line out to a cordless phone base. My phone service includes a distinctive ring number. I have the unit answer the distintive ring calls. I found it very easy to install and configure the unit. I used the control panel to complete the configuration. The configuration can be done either through the control panel or by using the software supplied with the unit. I used the software to adjust some of the configuration. I found it easy to use the control panel but likely would use the software for any future configuration as it is very easy to use and readily shows how you have configured the options. I found the input feeder to be reliable, scanning performance to be quick and of good quality, and print performance to be fast. So why have I rated the unit at 2 stars? A week and a half after installation the control panel suddenly lights up but is blank. I can print from PCs on the network and I can also scan using the HP utilities that shipped with the unit. I have no control over any functions on the unit itself other than being able to turn it on or off. Basically if you can't some how initiate a function from a PC on the network you can not perfom that function any longer. I would have selected an overall rating of 5 stars based on my experience with the unit up to the control panel failure. Really pretty disapointing considering the good feature set, performance, and price point of this printer.

Read blog for information and problems to expect. Overall satisfied with the 8600 Premium printer. So far, printing seems to be very economical with great results. Have not set up scan nor fax yet, but expect same satisfaction.

Set up was easy and everything functions as described in literature. It is fast and we use it primarily as a copy machine.

Software and process to scan to the computer is confusing. Too many steps in the process.
