Can't Find a "Print Preview" Function
on November 7, 2011

Every printer I have owned over the last 10 years has had a "Print Preview" function that shows, before the document is actually printed, how the document has been formatted for printing by the printer's formatting software . This allows the user to catch page formatting problems without wasting rims of paper. I cannot find a "Print Preview" function for HP's new Office Jet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One printer.
Supposedly there are two separate drivers for this printer, 1) a Basic Device Driver and 2) a Full Feature Driver. I have downloaded and installed each, but still get only a very basic interface to the printer; no Short Cuts to predefined printing configurations, no access to Printer Maintenance tasks, no color management, and NO PRINT PREVIEW.
I will have to return this printer, as I did the HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 last week, because the 8600, like the 8000, does not have the features and capabilities I was told by HP that it had.
My requirements are simple:
1. Print a book using Pigmented Inks, stored in separate tanks, for less cost than color laser printers.
2. Has an automatic Duplexer that can print pages with 0.26” top and bottom margins on both sides of a sheet of paper.
3. Provides a Print Preview function which shows how a duplex-printed book will look when printed and bound.
Although HP’s OJP 8000 had a wonderful Print Preview feature showing the document in book format with the back of one page on the left and front of the next page in the right and it could print pages with top and bottom margins as narrow as 0.13 inches when printing in simplex mode, when printing in duplex mode, it expanded both the top and bottom margins to one-half inch, causing the lost of almost ¾ inch of print space per page. This caused content to either spillover to additional inserted pages or scrunched the content down to fit in the ¾ inch reduced print space, causing squares to look like rectangles and making text difficult to read. Neither is acceptable.
Although the above problem appears to have been fixed in the 8600, I have thus far found only a very BASIC interface to the 8600, and it does not provide a “PRINT PREVIEW” function. Therefore unless someone other than the HP people with whom I have been speaking and emailing over the last week can tell me how to find and/or activate the PRINT PREVIEW function, the 8600 is going back as well.
Additional problems with the 8600 include:
· If I use the Search field in the 8600’s HELP application and have "Include Online results" checked, I get help for HP’s K8600 wide-format printer, not Hp’s Office Jet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One multiple function printer.
· FAX set up failed, claiming that I was “not using the correct type of phone cord.” even though I used the one supplied with the printer.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I really like my new HP8600 MF printer!

It was easy to set up and I am definitely not a techie. The one problem I did have was convincing it to print on "other photo paper" but a call to the tech center set this problem straight with a download specific to my printer and a very courteous assistant.
The scans are great - even of photos and the factory cartridges supplied have lasted amazingly well! Printed pages are more than satisfactory.
The only fault that is minimally disconcerting is that it shoots the paper out on the floor if I do not have the "catch" tray extended and the tray itself is a bit flimsy.
Well worth the money for a home MF printer/scanner! Thank you, HP.

Out of the box, loaded the ink, and fired up. Connected to my home Wifi and Internet. Then installed software on laptops for the whole house access. Everything came up and worked as advertised. Used for home and wife's teaching materials. Love the bigger paper magazine. May even order extra paper tray. Also connected up for printing thru eprint and Google Cloud so I could use my Android phone to print out emails and web pages. Google cloud route more effective for webpages. Also printed from wife's IPAD over Wifi in the house as well as directly from my Android phone. Also have a D100 but the 910a is stingier on ink use. HP eprint apps are convenient-especially to print my Google calendar and print out a variety of preprinted forms or lists for use around the house (Grocery, To Do, etc.) Haven't used the fax yet but have to relocate to connect to phone line when I want to fax. Could use the eprint fax if I needed it but for one or two faxes a year, doesn't figure large in my plans. Really like the autoshutoff or turnon feature by day and time so I can leave it on for sending items back to the house on the printer while I am mobile on my Android phone. Shuts down automatically early in the evening and kicks back on in the am.

I bought this as an ultra-cheap SOHO printer that I hoped would be adequate for my sometime use as a solo practitioner attorney. I find that the text reproduction is very sharp, as I read in other reviews.
Unfortunately, this product has some glaring flaws. First and foremost, the 35-sheet ADF (document feeder) is hobbled by the printer's lack of memory. Even though you can physically fit 35 sheets or so into the feeder, only 8 or so will actually copy at a time before it runs out of memory. Disappointingly, there is no memory upgrade available for this model either. This is a major inconvenience when copying documents with lots of attachments/exhibits.
The feeder is also annoying in that you have to flip it up, past a small stopping/clicking point, in order to retrieve the originals after copying. This means that it is likely to wear and possibly break over time.
The tray is small at 250 sheets capacity, but also it is completely enclosed so that one cannot see the paper level; my older HP printer had an open-front main tray that was actually more useful in this regard. The more frequent need for adding paper and the way the tray is implemented does not give me confidence in the long-term survivability of the tray. It is also a bit annoyingly difficult to withdraw and replace the main paper tray, since the tray is almost flush with the underside of the copy receiver (whatever the thing is called that extends to receive the printed/copied pages).
The software supplied with the printer does not allow as much customizeability of scans as the older HP Solutions Center software, which I will now have to track down and attempt to get to work with this new printer.
I am finding that the smaller than legal size flatbed is a bit of a hindrance in copying some books. I guess this is a case of "you get what you pay for".
The 951 ink cartridges are smaller and seem to me that they will be more expensive over time than the 88-series ink cartridges for some other HP printers. I may be wrong, and in any event the 951 series may fall in price. This is in any event simply not a high-capacity printer.
Bottom line: for a printer with an onsite support option that will mainly be used to print text and for occasional copying of small documents, this can be an adequate choice.
Pros:
+ Good text quality
+ Good scan quality
+ Adequate speed
+ Small
+ Quiet
+ Cheap next-day onsite support option available
Cons:
- ADF not as high-capacity in operation as promised due to low memory, with no memory upgrade available; copying is hence substandard and frustrating
- Low 250-sheet capacity
- Clumsy mechanical operability (e.g. when changing paper, picking up originals from ADF) likely caused in part by the small size and chosen design compromises
- Tiny flatbed, although something is better than nothing
- Supplied software is dumbed-down, offering less customizability than previous versions

Overall a good product but missing some features

I purchased the 8600 Pro to replace a 6500 E709n which I had been generally very pleased with, but which had developed a frustrating tendency of refusing to print black ink (HP needs to seriously look into this and send out a software patch online research quickly revealed that this is a hugely prevalent issue with that model). Anyway, it wasn’t worth investing more time and money to troubleshoot and the 8600 Pro looked like a nice step up, advertised as being faster and quieter and with some new features.
Overall I am reasonably pleased with the product, having used it for about two weeks now.
Pros:
• Usual HP ease of use, mostly intuitive functions and controls… mostly.
• Reasonably fast
• Good quality printing (most of my printing is color documents so can’t yet speak for photo printing)
Cons:
• Notably noisier than the older cheaper 6500 it replaced – not offensively so, but definitely noisier not quieter which is surprising.
• Scanning software is less functionally rich and includes very frustrating built in ‘rules’. Eg:
- No ability to add a page to a scan done on the flatbed, only through the feeder. Not all documents are suitable for a feeder and it is extremely frustrating not to be able to scan more than a one page document on the flatbed. The 6500 software had a simple “Add a Page” function in the software. The 8600 only has this for document feeder generated scans… why?!!
- No ability to re-order pages once scanned. Again, the 6500 had a very simple feature to re-order pages before committing the overall document to e.g. PDF The 8600 does not appear to which is very frustrating and requires you to start over and physically resort pages – why remove useful functionality on what should be a newer and more advanced product?

New purchase

I've just installed the OfficeJet Pro 8600. I set it up with a wireless connection to my home network, took advantage of the ePrintCenter option and played with that a bit, sending an email from my phone, and letting my mother send something from her house to the printer's email address. I haven't scanned or faxed yet; I rarely (years apart fax), but I'll test scanning later tonight.
The whole setup was simple. The instructions straightforward and clear. The duplex device and ink cartridges fit in smoothly and easily. I liked that the CD and registration already "knew" what I'd purchased, so I didn't have to type in the equipment and serial number.
Simple. Easy. And very fine print quality. The 8600 certainly gives a good first impression. And it's replacing a much-loved HP printer that was far, far past its expected lifespan. I hope the 8600 does as well as its HP predecessor.

I like the printer and I like the features. My wife (a teacher) had a 8500 which had made in excess of 45,000 copies when she retired. I was impressed with the 8600 and its price... until I looked at the cost of ink. A full set of XL cartridges cost almost as much as the printer.

I'm very happy with the quality of the printer and functions with the exception that it continues to drop connectivity and you go to print and you have to go through setting up the connection again before you can proceed. Very frustrating.
