LG thought out of the box on this one!

We inherited an old side by side in a house we recently bought. Not only did it not work well, it stuck way out into the room and ruined the sleek built in kitchen look we desired. This new counter depth LG fits snugly into the space, looking almost built in, and the shiny stainless finish is a very rich look.
But beyond cosmetics, this is truly a new generation refrigerator. The interior is brilliantly designed and smartly utilizes every cubic inch wisely. The LED lighting is awesome. We were worried that this refrigerator would not be quite large enough, but after a month or so we realize that due to it's design it is more than adequate. Everything is sort of in reach and line of sight. Things don't get lost in the back anymore. Out of date things are more easily spotted and discarded. Everything has it's place. 2 gallon milk jugs fit perfectly in the door for instance. Part of a shelf retracts to accommodate taller items. A small rack on the underside of the right door accommodates soda cans. I didn't even know this was there until I read the manual.
With the temp and humidity controls, I am convinced that things keep longer. The temps seem very even throughout. The bottom freezer is a world of it's own, with drawers on top of drawers of varying depth, there is a place for everything, even a giant frozen turkey or large pizza. Ice cream is at the perfect temp. A little rack for small items on the top inside of the drawer front is easy to get into and would otherwise be wasted space.
Probably my biggest concern with this model was the ice maker. I love the ingenious thin design, placing the compact ice maker and bin snugly in the door, and not consuming valuable internal space like most refrigerators. And I love the smaller ice cubes that seem to work and look better in drinks. But we live in a desert climate where it gets very hot and we like to have an evening cocktail or three, sometimes out in the hot sun around the pool. So I worried that this unit could not pump out enough ice for us and we would need to buy ice regularly. But the ice maker recycles quickly. We have never even come close to running out of ice. There is also a button you can push to increase ice production when you think you will be needing a lot. And just for backup, the refrigerator comes with a sturdy plastic ice bin that fits like a glove into the middle freezer drawer. So, every once in awhile, I put a few glasses full of ice from the ice maker into the reserve bin. It's now full and ready to be used in an emergency. But, alas, we have yet to need to dip into it, even when entertaining a few friends.
The water and ice dispenser on the front is different than most other refrigerators too. You can put tall things, like a pitcher, under the spigot. The ice dispenses flawlessly. The whole apparatus screams "quality and precision", including LED lighting. The water stream is precise and stops on a dime, as does the ice dispensing. Push button controls with LED digits are on the front allowing such things as setting temperature settings.
About the only thing I would change is the 3 produce drawers. They work very well and keep meat and produce fresh, but 2 larger drawers would provide more flexibility. A bunch of celery will not fit, for instance, and must lay on the shelf above.
By my calculations, this unit will be at least 20% more energy efficient than our old one, likely more considering that it is slightly smaller and uses the latest technology and insulation. Alarms alert you if a door is ajar or left open too long. The unit runs very quietly, and is barely noticeable. The water filter works well and appears sturdy and easy to remove. A light alerts you when to replace. And the air filter? Well I've never had a refrigerator with an air filter! What a concept.
Although I have not used it and hope I never have to, if there is a problem with the refrigerator, you can call LG and hold the phone up to a little speaker above the door, press a button, and the refrigerator sends an encoded tone that conveys diagnostic information to the LG rep. This will tell them what might be wrong so that when a service person does arrive, they will know what they are dealing with. Is this out of the box design or what!
All in all, this is a very futuristic and well designed unit. Cramming all this capacity and all these features into a much more shallow, counter depth box is a major accomplishment. And for all that engineering and design, you do pay a little more for this unit (thus my rating of 4 stars for value). But for us, it was worth it and it is a joy to interact with this fine piece of engineering on a daily basis.
Pros: Performance, Style/Design, easy to use, Features/Settings, Quality, space utilization

Counter depth ?, frost on tray otherwise very nice

We bought the LFX25991st french door, counter depth, water in door refrigerator in May this year. Lighting is Exceptional- can find anything inside with ease. We liked that the 3 freezer drawers in this model we're not made of that wire shelving. These are solid heavy duty molded plastic, but, the top 2 drawers tend to develop some light frost. And "Counter Depth" is a term used loosely. The outlet for our fridge is in the wall behind it, so the plug etc adds 1 ¾" to the depth right off the bat.
So, incl the plug and fridge doors, our fridge sticks out 4 ⅝ " past the std. base cabinet. However, since the counter top is deeper than the cabinet, it's not that bad. Also, note in addition to the fridge's listed width, each fridge door needs an addtl 1 ⅛" clearance to swing open.
Pros: easy to use, Features/Settings, Quality

great, but... my negative list
on December 31, 2012

from california, use
note my overall rating is 4 stars. my negatives are minor but i think warrants mentioning as fyi's to future buyers.
1. ICE MAKER: 1.a makes only 124 small ice cubes a day. sometimes not enough for my personal use and definitely not enough for a party. 1.b ice dispenser fails a lot when ice gets tangled up in the dispenser grate. need to take out, juggle ice a bit and return to door to see if it will work- sometimes more than once. it also fails if it fills all the way up. the door must be closed for dispensing.
2. ENERGY SAVER & WATER CONDENSATION: where the two doors meet on the inside condensation developed. there are directions on the left door that instruct you to increase the freezer temperature 1 degree at a time and decrease the fridge temperature in the same way. if this doesn't work directions are to Deactivate the Energy Saver! fortunately this worked for me. the freezer froze food and the fridge was cold enough even though i preferred my original colder settings.
3. FUNCTIONALITY: the doors don't open 180 degrees. they open maybe 120 degrees. can make for a tight squeeze when searching in some areas. really must open both doors to search or put something away. both doors must open to pull out the 'glide and serve 'drawer.
CONCLUSION:***** i like it a lot. even more if the following were solved. why produce a refrigerator with two doors if you have to open both to access anyway? why not solve by making the door swing 180 degrees since the bottom of the door is at counter height (smart?) why have an energy saver if condensation may force deactivation? why not solve the condensation problem, then one can set the temperature as preferred?
Pros: Performance, Quality, excellent except

Great Product at Reasonable Price

Have had for several months and works and looks great. Controls are simple for temperature adjustments if necessary to change.
Did have an icing up problem problem but tech support helped me to resolve by changing freezer setting slightly and keeping the area in front of a fan clear of food products. We had it blocked, a warning label of some kind would be helpful.

Ice Maker Issue resolved
on June 11, 2014

Absolutely love this refrigerator. I had read reviews about an issue with the ice maker dispenser stopping during use. I figured out that it only happens when you open the other door while filling a glass with ice. If you don't open the other door while using the ice maker dispenser, it never stops. Very happy I paid the extra money for the counter depth model since it's next to a doorway. I actually have more room in it than I did on my side-by-side. Being 70 I was worried about bending over for the freezer but I really spend less time looking for things with the two handy slide out trays than I did with my side-by-side. It is a VERY quiet refrigerator. Never a fan of stainless finish but it has grown on me and is easy to clean.
Pros: no regrets!

Love this fridge, but...

This is an excellent refrigerator. My wife and I love it. You can use the water dispenser to fill anything, unlike most models. It holds a ton of food and is very, very quiet. The LED lights are beautiful and the drawers slide with ease. I only have two complaints:
1. It doesn't hold enough chilled water, as in you're lucky to get one glass every six hours that's chilled, we just always use ice now.
2. We did have one mechanical problem. We had a bad gasket connection in the freezer and ice would build up. It took 4 visits from incompetent repairmen to fix. Not LG's fault the repairmen were bad but LG's fault that the gasket didn't work in the first place. Once they fixed it, the ice went away and didn't come back.
Overall we still love this fridge, considering the trouble we've had this has got to speak volumes.

Satisfied with new fridge
on August 4, 2012

I did a lot of research on cabinet depth fridges and this one was the best. It had the largest capacity. There are only a few things I don't like but would still go with this fridge over similar ones. Gallon milks don't fit except on the door without adjusting shelves which would make it harder to store other items. In the store the water wasn't hooked up, of course, so I didn't really notice how it worked. The water comes out by pushing a button on the top. Ice by the button on the bottom. That was a little confusing. The first time people use it they don't put the cup in the right place & spill water or get ice. The cubes are smaller than normal & it takes a long time to make a small amount of ice. I have to plan ahead for parties. I like the larger area though for filling pitchers. The worst design is the bottom thin, long drawer. You can't open it without opening both doors. The freezer is great and fits a lot more than it looks like it will.

Best in Class

We had to go with the counter depth. This brand and model won us over in the store. There really wasnt anything comprable. It came highly rated at the big box store by the appliance sales expert. The layout of the fridge is very good. The drawers could be a tad longer. The in door water and ice dispenser saves lots of space but the door can slam due to the extra weight. A damper would have been nice. The fridge is very quiet and doesnt make the jarring cracking sounds like others do. Handles are very sturdy and the freezer door opens well with the assist mechanism. The control pad is user friendly and the LED lights on the water dispenser is a good night time kitchen light. The interior lighting is very bright and LED also. The water and ice dispenser paddles are coated plastic and can scratch but if you put some clear tape on them they wont. I would buy this model again. No issues in three months since purchase.
