Great lens and nice bargain

I purchased this lens as a refurbished product. Pricewise it was a great bargain as Canon had further 10% off. It came with Lens, both Caps, Hood and Case. The box came with was not original lens box. Product had no scratches, marks or any visible sign showing that is used or so. It was looking like a new one. Lens build quality is a amazing, built like a tank. I have taken several shots so far and image quality is excellent as it should be in L lens. But I would say it is very little soft on wider side than telephoto. Image stabilization works awesome on this lens. Even at telephoto end it quickly stabilizes the image as soon I press AF or shutter button and I can click the shot. Lens is bit heavy at 1050 gms. I use Canon 80D which gives me focal range on this lens from 112-480mm.
Earlier I had bought Canon 70-200mm f/4 L Lens non-IS, but image quality did not seem to be on par with the L tag even in bright light. I was surprised and returned it. In comparison, this lens is amazing. I plan to use it to shoot wild life, birds and maybe sports. Overall I am very with the product.

Non Better

I have used this lens for over 3 years and I have found that the Canon 70-300mm DO IS lens to be real work horse in photographing historical and battle reenactments and on my travels. I can use the short end to set up the scene and the 300mm for close in and detail pictures.
I bought this lens as a step up from the 100-300mm USM and have been extremely pleased with the results. This lens is sharp, the build quality and light weight of the lens holds up well when running around the battlefield, it encompasses the needed focal lengths and it is reliable! It might not be an “L” series lens but I wouldn’t replace it for anything. Keeping in mind the demands of the consumer, product quality, price point and intended use, Canon has done an excellent job with this lens.
I have owned and used Canon cameras and lenses for over 40 years. I am one of those old fashion photographers that still uses film, I even use my old Canon AT-1 with the 28-85mm FD lens, so I don’t just rattle off a dozen pictures without thinking. Would I recommend the Canon 70-300mm DO IS lens to anybody, you can bet on it.
Pros: quality, focal length range, quick focus, image stablilization

Underrated hidden gem

I bought this lens after doing a lot of research on telephoto zoom L series. Compared to the celebrated 70-200 f/4 L IS, or 70-200 f/2.8 L IS, this lens is not that popular. I wondered why! However, I got a good deal and bought it. I would never regret my decision. This is one of the sharpest lens that I have used. The zoom range is good for almost anything, wich makes it a perfect travel lens. Here are the Pros and Cons.
Pros: 1. Perfect weight for handheld photography. No need for tripod. I use it for all day shooting on my 6d. The weight grows on you.
2. Excellent for portrait. The range between 100 - 150 is very sharp and you have the max f/4 limit, making creamy bokeh possible.
3. Sharpness at 300 mm. 100 crop at 300mm can beat other lenses (I compared with a 150-600mm from another maker). So if you are thinking of buying a longer lens but don't have all the cash, try this one!
4. Versatile: Takes decent landscape, excellent portrait and above expectation wildlife and nature photographs. Can't et any better.
Cons: 1. Tracking moving object: Little slow in AI Servo mode - tracking is decent though. Maybe I will buy a 400 f.5.6 for that. But remember this is not supposed to be for BIF but I could take some decent BIF pics with practice.
2. Tripod Ring not included in price. See Pros. #1. I actually have it but never used it! Might be helpful if I decide to take the solar eclipse picture. Do you really need it?
3. Focusing ring placement: Some people say it's an inconvenience. I am just writing it here to reiterate - it's no big deal! The pros outweighs te cons many times over!

Terrific Lens

I've used this lens for the past three years on 60D and a 5DIII bodies. The sharpness and operation are excellent and the stabilization is superb. I've shot sharp images at 300mm and 1/30 second! The lens works well for outdoor sports when on the 60D. This makes the lens an effective 112-480 zoom.

fantastic lense

If you could own only one telephoto zoom this is the lense I would choose. Canon has packed a lot of lense into a compact size. The focus is very fast and tack sharp, and the image stabilization works extremely well. The weight is significant but the overall size is very moderate.I am very very pleased with the purchase.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: heavy, expensive

Spy Lens

This lens is for someone who...
...doesn't need L quality
...can afford up to $1000
...wants a small lens for travel and/or candids
.
My wife and I call this the spy lens. We do a lot of traveling, and only take carry-ons so size does matter. More importantly (as others have said), people get uncomfortable when you point a huge lens at them. I get great candids with both this and my 85mm 1.8 without subjects realizing they're being shot. I've actually had people get out of my way because they thought I was shooting a building or statue behind them. The IS is also great when the light fades.
.
I have also shot auto races with this lens. The USM is fast and steady. It keeps up with the 6 fps of my 50D nicely.
.
I have limited experience with other Canon zooms. This seems slightly better than the other 70-300, same or better IQ and a bit faster USM. It isn't as sharp as the 70-200 2.8 L, however.
.
The MSRP is too high for a non-L lens. I bought it used for just under $900. If you can get it for under $1000, it's worth it.

Favorite zoom lens

from out snaping photos
Was using a 70-300mm non-L and upgraded to a 100-400mm, but couldn't deal with the slide zoom together with its weight. I received my 70-300mm L lens last winter and I concur with all the others that say this lens should come with the tripod ring the initial literature promised would be included. However all that happened when I pointed out that I was owed a tripod ring was the language was changed in the ads to no longer include one.
However I feel the price is correct for this lens as delivered - SUPER fast autofocus with great image stabilization with my 60D. When I shoot action at slower shutter speeds, my keep rate doubled with this lens over my non-L 70-300mm. I find I can literally wave the camera around and get a few surprisingly usable shots! It's also light enough that my 70-200mm L IS never gets used. Highly recommended.
Pros: superfast auto focus, great i.s., great color, light weight for what it does, focus ring is close to the camera which i prefer
Cons: no tripod mount

L series introduction
on January 17, 2013

from Arizona
This is my first L series lens and it was selected for the range it provides (70-300mm) as that is what I've been shooting with for years. With just a few 'test shots' under purposely challenging conditions to see what the IS could compensate for I was already impressed. Full zoom, hand-held while sitting in a running vehicle is most certainly not ideal for ANY lens, but even those shots which were by design, difficult, turned out better than I'd expected by a long ways. Now on to applying more traditional techniques...outstanding results in every aspect. Having selected the center focus box on manual selection, I went and took some aviation shots where the only thing that provides a reference point is the aircraft itself. Purposely causing an out of focus scenario by removing the focus point from the aircraft, once placed back onto it again there was no 'hunting', focus was re-established almost instantly.
This isn't a lens for lightweights as it most certainly is not one either, but when considering how much glass and metal one is actually carrying around with this lens, it is not unreasonably heavy all things considered. I may need a tripod collar eventually as my niche is extended exposures/night shots/ lightning photography, but I have not a single regret in having selected this lens!
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: lens weight takes some getting used to
