Good software, but MFC are complicated
on April 27, 2012

MFC (MultiFuction Copiers) are complicated by nature because of the large number of things they must do well. Epson has invested a lot of effort in making their MFC easier to use, and it shows.
I just installed the MFC, so cannot comment on its performance, but have following observations about the installation:
1) Labeling is black-on-black. This is very common, but still inconvenient. I use a flashlight and sometimes a magnifying glass to read the labels.
2) Had a major issue with inserting the printer cartridges. They can be inserted 2 ways: Epson label pointing up or down. This is a design flaw. An easy fix would be to have matching arrows on the cartridges and the MFC.
Anyway, I tried both ways and the cartridges seemed to go-in better with the label pointing down. Instructions said to wait for a click. Well you press with *moderate* firmness and you hear a click.
Inserted all 4 cartridges this way and turned-out a flimsy piece of metal in the back got bent!
Half an hour of troubleshooting later, I discovered the problem. Took-out the cartridges, got a pair of pliers and a flathead screw driver and laboriously straightened the bent metal through the 3"x4" opening.
Reinserted the cartridges with Epson label pointing-up and proceeded with the installation.
3) It's easly to misplace CD-ROMs, so I copy them to the hard disk and install the software from there. Well, EPSON installation software got very confused by this and refused to install. So now I have to very carefully hold-on to the CR-ROM so I can install the MFC software on other and future computers in our household.
4) This is a bulky unit that needs about 20 inches of space front-to-back for comfortable operation. Width requirement is about 18 inches.
5) Convenient envelope printing is an infrequent, but extremely useful feature. On the Epson I don't see any easy way to print envelopes.
Conclusion: So why am I giving it 4*? Because I think other MFCs are worse. This is a very difficult product to get right.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4530 All-in-One Printer

Ok print quality.
Very unreliable wireless connectivity to the point I broke down and bought a hard wire connection.
Very unreliable paper feed. Error messages about 'Paper Jam' when there was none. Constantly wasting time re-booting the printer.
Didn't integrate with Microsoft, they seemed to not like each other.
The unit was only tolerable for 1.5 ink cartridge change outs before it landed in the trash.

Black Ink Blotching and Wet.

I bought this printer exactly 3 year ago November 2011 with light use in business mostly for copying and faxing. In fact I believe I may be only on my 3rd black cartridge after the starter. I've been very happy until now. I've read other reviews with the yellow leaking with no fix available. I just emailed support to see if there is a resolution to this issue. I'm hoping this can be resolved. I just bought a WP-2650 for home that I just unpacked and am concerned it's the same technology. I will base my decision to keep the 2650 based on what support will do.

So far I am not happy. I am trying to load the software on my apple with lion and also on my pc with microsoft xp and in both cases it is not a smooth process. I went to the Epson ndownload site to get the apple driver and it would not download despite numerous attempts. I was able to do the pc download but only for USB and not wireless. I am going to try again but I may be packing it up and sending it back to the Epson online store
