The best LeapFrog Device
on July 9, 2015

My kids ages 5 & 7 have had LeapFrog devices in their hands since toddlerhood and the new LeapPad Platinum is by far the best product that LeapFrog has produced. The large screen, fast processor and high resolution touchscreen make it feel like an adult tablet with kid-safe durability. The educational content is fun and engaging and there is enough content with included apps and videos to really enjoy the device out of the box. The Imagicard component takes play to an entirely new level and the kids really like snapping photos of the cards (a necessary component of the games) emulating what mom does with her camera for work. The children adore turning their faces into a variety of animals in the Photo fun Ultra app and my son is thrilled to play Ninja Turtles while reinforcing mathematical skills. If you’re looking for one tablet for your child – the Platinum is it. Learning is presented in the most fun and engaging ways - and LeapSearch ensures kid-safe web browsing with adjustable adult parameters. Although we received the product to review, opinions are honest and my own.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Educational

Fun and Stable Learning Platform

The LeapPad Platinum is another in a great series of kids' tablets. This device appears much more sleek and slender, and the software is more stable than the LeapPad Ultra.
One of my favorite things about LeapPad tablets is the LeapSearch web browser. Only kid-friendly videos are added to the browser, so you know there's no faulty "filter" not really protecting your kids.
The LeapPad Platinum release also introduces ImagiCard, which is a collection of cards that interacts with your LeapPad to bring more characters to your games. For our family, this was the least impressive addition to the LeapPad Platinum. As a mom, I knew right away that I'd be finding cards all over the house, although a nice metal tin is available to hold cards. My 5-year old wasn't interested in the cards at all. He said the games already had pre-loaded cards, so he didn't care to use them in the games. He did use the cards for other, non-LeapPad, activities, though. :)
This review contains only my opinions. LeapPad provided the LeapPad Platinum and games for my review.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

WiFi on a LeapPad?!?
on July 10, 2015

Wifi for my kids on thier LeapPAD, what?!?!?!? I was nervous. The internet is a bit of a difficult thing for me as a parent. I want the kids to know how to use technology, so I am not about to bury my head in the sand and assume that they will learn on their own. Guidance it key in this, and even though it is a difficult job keeping on top internet safety and proper usage for young kids. With a house full of kids at various ages from 14 to 18 months, I sometimes feel exhausted in this never ending job. It is our job to know and stay on top of the latest and greatest apps and trends. The LeapPAD Platinum makes this easy for parents with the ability to allow limited browsing abilities for children to watch appropriate videos read new articles and play learning related internet games. There are several different categories of exploration that is sure to intrigue all different children (and maybe even the adults in your house).
The WiFi feature eliminates the need to connect to the computer, but allows a parent to directly interface with LeapFrog to add content to the device. This makes my life way easier, as I am often too lazy to find a cord and log on through my computer; yes, I am that parent!
I also love the easily found time limit activation. Current settings are 30min of playing time and 4 hours break required. This moves the timer from my kitchen counter to the device! Perfect for limiting screen time on a beautiful summer day.
The rest of the LeapPAD Platinum’s functionality is very similar to the previous versions of the LeapPAD. I am hoping the screen is more durable as my previous one ended up with a crushed screen, and was unusable.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

Kid- and Mom-Approved Innovation

I recently received the LeapPad Platinum and a set of Imagicard Learning cards at no cost for review purposes and have given my 4yo daughter, 6yo son, and 9yo son the opportunity to put the products to the test. I, too, have spent a lot of time exploring the products and feel—once again—LeapFrog delivers.
Our older generation LeapPads have been put through the ringer and have held up quite well, but the design of the Platinum feels much more sturdy and easy to grip. I'm confident knowing that if my little ones drop it, the screen won't crack and it will be just fine. It is also heavier than past tablets which I like. I feel like the weight discourages prolonged screen play. I also LOVE that no batteries are needed and that there's an easy-to-use wall charger. My kids went through batteries like crazy with the older models and that alone is a HUGE cost savings of this new product.
PERSONAL PROS: -Safe Web Browsing. I love that my kids can go online (I enabled Wi-fi) and learn to explore the web without concern about the content. When they've clicked on any ads, a screen comes up saying the content isn't available. Great peace of mind as a parent and lots of fun for kids—especially my 9yo who is learning to browse the web more, but isn't always savvy about his video searches. -Great Demos. My tech-savvy(ish) kids don't take time to read directions (especially those too young to read), and I love that LeapFrog gives simple, yet comprehensive demos for kids to engage with and learn to play. We weren't sure how to use the Imagicards and we're doing it correctly. A quick view of the demo and the kids were set. -8GB Storage. No need to remove and add apps, pictures, music, etc. -Great Resolution. -Photo Fun. My kids love taking pictures, but they love playing with and altering them even more.
PERSONAL CON: -Included Music. My older kids loved that KidzBop used to be included on the LeapPad and were disappointed to find "baby" music included on this version. I checked the app store and their favorites are available for purchase.
Overall, our whole family is quite pleased with the LeapPad Platinum (even my 9yo who has his own iPod). I think my 4yo will get the most out of the games since she's at the prime age to soak up the reading and math skills that the games/apps we have focus on.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

LeapPad Platinum: Educational Fun for Kids

We were recently invited to participate in a review of the LeapFrog LeapPad Platinum as part of the LeapFrog Blogger Program. Below are some of both the kids' & mine favorite features of the LeapPad Platinum: 1. Built in Wi-Fi with Kid Safe Web: My children have access to a vast amount of kid-appropriate videos & more, all which have been reviewed and approved by learning experts. 2. 7 Inch Touchscreen: With both an iPad & Kindle in our household, the kids are used to touch screen. The LeapPad Platinum touch screen is easy for the kids to use & the larger screen size on this updated LeapPad version is great for little eyes. 3. Option for Peer to Peer Play: Since we already own one LeapPad in this house, it's great to have the option for the boys to play together while each holding their own LeapPad. It's a fun little plus to this learning toy! 4. Super Durable: With three young children, I only look for products that can withhold the test of our young children. This Leapfrog LeapPad Platinum is advertised as the toughest ever with it's shatter safe screen & wrap around bumper. With two weeks of traveling, our LeapPad Platinum looks as good as new and is super easy for little hands to hold. 5. Just for Me Ability: Games are adaptive to a child's ability. If the LeapPad is sensing that your child is having trouble, it will make things a little easier or challenge the game for a kid who finds it too easy. This is great when you have several kids at different abilities using the same LeapPad. 6. Great for Young Ages: My four year old loves the LeapPad & never has trouble navigating between games and apps. On the other hand, with the iPad and Kindle, he is always asking for help on how to get to another game. I love that the LeapPad is created for kids and only kids. Everything is child-centered and easy to use for young children! 7. Built In Camera & Video: While we were traveling, it was great for the kids to take their own pictures on their LeapPad. They can collect their own photographs & memories on their own device and look at them once they return home. 8. Great Selection of Games: My kids love playing games that are created for them. They love that they can become their own favorite characters from Paw Patrol and Ninja Turtles in the great selection of games available to the LeapPad Platinum. 9. Imagicard: There is a great new feature from Leapfrog called Imagicard. This is a system that combines cards & the LeapPad's camera to create a game. Six cards are included in the system, but you can buy more as well. 10. An Easy Educational Tool: With young children at home, there are moments that I need to rely on technology to make it through our days. I love the LeapFrog LeapPad Platinum because I know my kids are learning while having fun as well!
We highly recommend checking out the LeapFrog LeapPad Platinum, especially if you are looking for a technological resource for the preschool-aged children. It's a great educational product that challenges & encourages children to learn and have fun at the same time!

Another Great Leapfrog Product

As a big fan of LeapFrog products we were excited to try the latest addition to the LeapPad suite. My kids use their LeapPads all the time before bed and in long car rides and road trips. It's a must in our house for keeping them entertained, but also feeling like they're learning and this was no exception. It is sturdier which makes me less afraid of it being dropped, and has a bigger screen which makes it easy to play and interact with. We love the higher resolution since my kids like to watch videos in addition to playing games. And the imagicard features are the icing on the top of an already perfect ice cream sundae! We love and definitely recommend this product!

Must-buy for 1st-timers, but Ultra owners can skip

When LeapFrog came up with the LeapPad Ultra in 2013, I was blown away by how much better it was than previous LeapPad versions. Nearly 2 years later, when I heard that LeapFrog was coming up with a newer version of the LeapPad -- the LeapPad Platinum -- I was so excited to see what improvements they would come up with and what new bells and whistles it would come with. When LeapFrog sent me a review unit to try out, I decided to gift it to my 5 year-old niece.
PROS: My nieces loves her new LeapPad Platinum! Her eyes lit up when she first saw it, and now she carries it around with her everywhere and calls it her special iPad. She plays on her parents' tablet and phones all the time, so she was able to get up and running and start having fun on the LeapPad Platinum right away. She loves taking selfies of herself and her little sister just like her parents do on their phones! The new Imagicard feature (a set of special cards that kids can scan into the LeapPad Platinum and have the characters on the cards come to life on the LeapPad Platinum) is icing on the cake. She's already a big fan of Paw Patrol, so she was amazed that she could scan Imagicard with the LeapPad Platinum and see her favorite Paw Patrol characters join the videogame she is playing. I've always said that the LeapPad is the perfect kid-friendly tablet and the perfect alternative to letting your kids play on your phone or tablet, and the new Platinum version is no different. It really does give kids hours of educational fun right out of the box, without any of the set-up headaches that plague parents when they try to make their devices kid-safe.
CONS: Most of the features found in the LeapPad Platinum are the exact same features that I was so excited to see on the Ultra: the 7" hi-res screen, 8 GB memory, Wifi capability, kid-safe browser, 2MP front and back camera, 480p video, accelerometer, rechargeable battery. The battery life of the Platinum (5 hrs) is actually less than the Ultra (8hrs)! I was disappointed to see that the Platinum was so similar to the Ultra. Pretty much the only new feature is the Imagicard technology. Don't get me wrong, Imagicard is an awesome technology and it certainly enhances the educational and entertainment experience for kids.... but the Platinum sells for $129, whereas the Ultra can be found on sale for $64.99 (it originally sold for $149). Is the LeapPad Platinum worth the price premium? You decide!
Disclosure: Leapfrog provided me with a free LeapPad Platinum to review.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

LeapPad Platinum Rocks!

What an amazing tool for getting my kid excited about learning. She has been an avid sponge of knowledge from day one, but now it feels a lot more like fun. I even get wrapped up in it and am forced to hand it back over to it's rightful owner. A great investment in my daughters future. I can't wait to explore other LeapFrog products!
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational
