ROKU 4 is buggy. It only wanted to connect to the 5g connection. The screen blips every once in a while on 4k. I needed to lower the resolution to 1080p to get it to work like the ROKU 3. While makes me wonder why I got the ROKU 4. I would wait until all the bugs are works out.

Questionable decisions about firmware updates!!!!

I got this the moment it was released. I don't have a UHD TV nor projector, but I could use a more powerful streaming device. Where I am in California, ATT provide dismal download rates on Uverse and image quality is variable on a Roku 3. The image quality across all channels was an immediate improvement on the Roku 4. The interface is also appreciably snappier. Why less than 5 stars, then? Latest firmware update made the Roku unusable with my Acer H6510BD projector with which it had previously worked flawlessly. As far as I can tell, the Roku instigates an HDCP 2.2 handshake even though it is simply an HD projector - since the Acer is not HDCP 2.2 compliant, nothing is shown. Adding an HDMI splitter solved the problem. But such problems shouldn't arise in the first place - if Roku want to make devices which work only with HDCP 2.2 compliant hardware, then they should advertise this fact in big bold letters on their website. Firmware updates (which are unavoidable) can hardly be counted as adding value to a device if they render it unusable.

Crash Prone

I bought this about 6 weeks ago. Since then, it has crashed/rebooted more times than my XS did the entire time I used it. Since the XS didn't have the updated Netflix or Amazon app, replacing it was the only way to get those. It appears I should've just been satisfied with the XS and the old apps. The only thing this has going for it is the updated apps and the 'find the remote' feature.

I plugged it in and the fan was rubbing on the inside right out of the gate. I am going back to the Roku 3 until the can solve the fan issue. They offered to return and replace with a different Roku 4, but I don't want to chance that one having the issue also. I am going to return it for the Roku 3 and upgrade once they figure out how to get it silent again.

This is my third Roku 4 and my last. I have had to return each one because they would not turn on. I've had this the longest over a month before it quit. The other two lasted less than a week

Roku 4 is Great, but Roku 3 is Still Better.

I have 4 roku 3s in the house and decided to upgrade my theater to the Roku 4. I love the roku platform and it has all of the best apps. It is the only player out there with Crunchyroll, Funimation, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and PLEX. It has a couple other good anime apps I use as well.
So what is new on the 4 good and bad?
Good: 1. Faster (of course), but you may not notice it when loading your apps since they are more dependent on internet speed than device. I can tell the difference, but only in certain apps. 2. Supports 4K 3. The rest is basically the same as the 3 not that it is a bad thing. The 3 is still awesome. 4. Hard wire network 1 Gb U-Verse. Roku 4 seems to get better speed performance out of it than the 3 did. Buffering is faster for sure, but that depends on the app too.
Bad: 1. HDMI handshake issues when first starting a display. It happens every time I start my display. It will flash for about 30 seconds before it stops. Turn on display, see the Roku home screen, full screen black flashes, some short some long, and finally after doing this for 30 seconds it will quit and work perfectly the rest of the time. I have tried multiple high-end cables (Tributaries, Ethereal (Velox)) and some lower end cables from Honeywell. All of these are top certified brands and work perfectly on my other devices including the Roku 3, Oppo BDP-105, PS4, HTPC, XBOX One, U-Verse, etc... Note: I have a receiver and display. Not sure if its handshake with the projector or the receiver. Haven't tried going directly to projector to see. Receiver just passes through on 4K though so it should not be an issue. Note 2: I am running the Roku 4 in 1080p mode right now since my projector is 1080p (Sony 40ES)
2. Crashes - I had Hulu crash on me twice in 2 hours. Then I opened up a show in Funimation and it was about 17 minutes into a 22 minute show and the Roku froze for about 30 seconds then rebooted itself. This would happen from time to time on my Roku 3 as well, but I never had this issue 3 times in one night. I hope this is not the normal. If it doesn't improve I will have to return the 4. All streaming players crash. Mostly because of the apps themselves not the player. However, I use the same apps on the Roku 3 and they never crashed more than one time a night. Fingers crossed it is just a fluke.
I am a hardcore user and Roku is my go to device. I am hoping these issues are software glitches related to the newer hardware. I am going to work on some troubleshooting of my own to see if I can at least fix the handshake issue. Right now I would say this. If you do not have a 4k display buy the Roku 3 since it is the best player on the market. If you do have a 4k display the Roku 4 is still a recommended, but do note there are a few quirks that still need to be ironed out.

Awesome Device

I was so pleased after using the Roku 4 for over a month, that I purchased a second Roku 4 to use in another room. I was shocked at how much content (free content) was available. We had previously used Blu-ray players for streaming and when we switched to the Roku, the experience was likely going from Standard TV to HD. Extremely impressed with the speed and the simplicity in using the device. Will likely purchase additional Roku's for the other rooms in the house. Took it on vacation with us to use in our hotel room, after a long day out, that was nice.
