Not what I had hoped it would be.

I purchased this last year as an upgrade to my HX100 (which takes a better image) and as a smaller version of my A77 for taking into concerts. Well it's not much of an improvement over the HX100 and it is a dismal second camera for the easy stuff. What I had wanted was a camera that could produce crisp images like my A77 at a lower resolution. When you look at the original image it's OK. But when you enlarge the image you start seeing how the processor arranges the pixels in these semi-swirly patterns which look hideous in any type of post processing. Instead of crisp lines between light and dark areas you get these little curved lines protruding from what should be a simple line. Not so noticeable as a normal image, but when you start cropping and looking closer they are ugly and annoying. I sold mine at a lose so I can purchase the A6000, since it has the same sensor and processor as my A77. I hope it works just as well.

Disappointed so far! - No screenshot during video?

I am upgrading from a previous model and I am very disappointed so far. I have had 5 previous models of this camera and have always loved every model better than the previous. I have only used the camera a few times but am already very frustrated, disappointed and am considering returning it. First, they have eliminated the option of taking a photo during videoing. This is extremely important when you are using your only camera, you're the only shooter and want a photo to have of the event you're videoing. They have this option with previous models. Why take away a feature? I am also disappointed in the crispness of the pictures. They are not any clearer than the previous models though the mega pixels have increased. When using the flash, in automatic, the pictures are way over exposed. I tried to shoot in program mode but there doesn't seem to be a flash control there like previous models. All of the flash photos look way blown out and yellow. Lastly, when you take a photo and want to immediately take another photo at a different focal length, if you use the zoom, it takes you to a preview mode to preview all images or view a calendar if you don't wait for the image to preview and disappear. So, if you are photographing something important, and want to take a close up and a far away picture, instantly after you take the close up, you are going to miss out on something by waiting for this preview to disappear if you forget and try to zoom in or out, you're now in another screen unless you stop...hit the shutter and by that time the important fleeting moment has passed. I am sure that I will have additional complaints but since I have only used the camera a couple of times (for two very important events that I can't get back) this is what I have noticed so far. The only positive that I see so far is video quality is much better than previous models.
I spent a lot of time investigating cameras. Went to an actual camera store. Spent a lot of time with the sales person. Purchased because of the good reviews. Took a class and still found this camera very difficult to use. It’s useless because I can’t get the WiFi feature to work and that’s the only way to get pictures uploaded to phone, computer or iPad.

Hi Pattyann, To be able to transfer pictures from the camera to a smartphone using Wi-Fi function, PlayMemories should be installed on your smartphone. You can follow the helpful guide here: http://docs.esupport.sony.com/dvimag/2014/DSC-HX400-HX400V_guide/en/cover/level2_07.html Regards, Vincent
