Awesome for beginners almost no compromises.

I bought this as a first personal use DSLR and was shocked by the quality and ease of use especially in manual mode. The controls are ergonomic and well thought out giving priority to shutter speed for compensating differences in lighting which is certainly a better compromise to changing ISO when the aperture is wide open. The flash I feel should have been a removable accessory as it really only aids in making a clear shot indoors in poor lighting. The included kit glass is quite sharp and will suffice for most casual shooters but being 55mm is your max length here it will not compare to even mid range point and shoot options in terms of reach but the high resolution and large APS-C sensor will allow a lot of cropping before quality starts to degrade far more than any grade consumer point and shoot anyway. I will warn that the T5 does not resolve focus while video is recording which would inevitably require you to switch the lense to manual focus a huge downside and the focus mechanism is the loudest I've heard in a Canon branded lense, a distant difference to the same length kit lense included with the more premium t5i (an STM lense) and focus is a tad slower than with its t5i cousin but I feel it is a world better than most at it's average price. Battery life is really where these cameras shine, I was able to get several hundred shots a day on a single cell and needed no battery changes in almost an entire days worth of shooting an impossibility with my mirrorless cameras.
I would recommend this to a friend!

EOS 1200 - Rebel T5

After watching Canon commercials for years, I decided to give SLR cameras another try. I had, still have it, an SLR film camera years ago, and had modest success with it. Learning was expensive with film, but I realized that a DSLR could let me learn almost for free. The only real cost to learn is in time and recharging the battery. I started reading online reviews and noticed that the Rebel T5 had reviews that came mostly in two basic flavors: reviews by
professional reviewers and reviews by actual consumers and owners. The professionals tended to give out mostly medium ratings and reviews, never stellar grades. On the other hand, reviews by actual consumers were mostly bubbling over with satisfaction. Occasionally, a professional would say that it would make a great camera for beginners. I said, "Hey that's me." I had to wait for spring and summer to come, biding my time as the snow melted. When warm weather came, I was finally able
to do something besides use the flash. While waiting for spring, I did figure out how to use White Balance to compensate for those indoor fluorescent light bulbs that replace incandescent bulbs. I did that by putting the camera into "P" mode, program aperture mode, and learned a lot about the camera. I learned about lenses by putting the camera into "A" mode, which is an automatic, point and shoot mode. I now use the "Creative" modes, which range from semi-automatic to fully manual, almost exclusively. There are modes that
allow you to manually set either F-Stop, ISO, or Shutter Speed, while leaving the other two settings in automatic, or a semi-automatic mode. This is great for learning what each of them do, and how they interact with one another. I've had so many "AHA" moments, that I have lost count. This camera will teach you how to use it, if you let it. It has display tips that help remind you what does what.
But, the most important trick that I have learned is to get as much light as possible on the subject, combined with using a fast shutter speed, 1/800 or faster, will almost yield really sharp and detailed pictures. I do this by putting the camera into "Tv" mode, which allows you to manually set the shutter speed and let the camera automatically figure out the rest.
Sometimes I want to force the camera into using a certain ISO speed, which I do using the "P" mode, which caused me to accidentally cause the camera to take a long exposure when I began taking outdoor pictures in the backyard at night time. I had the camera set for ISO-200 during the afternoon, and never reset it before I began. Hand holding the camera for a 5-20 second exposure resulted in a blurry image, naturally. I grabbed my tripod tried it again, by aiming at a still object. WOW. My fuzzy and grainy pictures at night problem was solved!
Back in the spring, I was trying to shoot pictures of the blooming flowers in the yard, and accidentally caught an insect in one image that I didn't know was there. It was very small, and it looked fuzzy. I discovered what that macro distance
figure on the side of the lens was telling me. That's the minimum distance the lens can focus, but some wonderful things can happen when you do shoot at that distance. You can shoot pictures of really small stuff when you use longer focal lengths.
I added a closeup lens filter to the "EF-S 16-55mm" lens that came with it, and repeatedly impressed myself...provided that I had more than enough light, which is the real trick. I used the "EF 70-300mm" lens and my tripod to take pictures of the moon, and again I repeatedly impressed myself. If you think I enjoy my camera, you're wrong. I love it. Did I mention that I just discovered I can take even sharper images if I save them in RAW mode, and use the "Digital Photo Professional" software package, which comes with the camera, to clean up, and enhance pictures after you download them to your computer? That package is worth the price alone. You can download data on your lenses, and the software can be used to correct for aberrations caused by a specific lens. What I like best about it is that all of the changes you make can be undone whenever you like.

I love my canon, pictures are so clear and I have a lot of fun with lens - pictures are no more same
I bought this canon T5 for my birthday's wife , perfect gift -
The photoshooting is fast - We set everything in automatic because this is our first canon -
The canon T5 is easy to understand and to use - ( live view, video, manual , etc) - you can remove easily the lens in one clic - the battery can last weeks - and easy to transfer pictures from the camera to laptop (sdhc card)
If you want to have excellent pictures for family, events, wedding , etc and are an entry level , that's an excellent choice -

I just bought the T5 and 18-55 bundle! And it's a great camera! I am amazed at the quality at the higher ISO's. My only complaint is that they didn't include the option to use an external mic for HD video! I would suggest this camera to anyone! At this price its a steal!

This is a great camera for beginners I would mainly recommend this for photogrphers not for videography due to it's lack of focus capability. It would have been great if they included a bag for it.
