Epic is right!
on October 20, 2015

We were given the chance to try out an Epic recently and my daughter LOVES it! Like all other LeapFrog tablets before it I love that I can trust the games to be both educational and entertaining. What good is an educational game if your kids don't want to play it? No worries with LeapFrog!
Pros:
- great graphics
- limited internet access (all with parental controls): we are homeschoolers and this is great for research!
- multiple customized accounts: We can have games for both kids separate from each other.
- Access to both the LeapFrog and Android app store right from the device: No more having to find a cord to download new games!
Cons:
I have one con for the epic, and it is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars:
- Cartridge games cannot be played.
If the Epic is your first LeapFrog tablet, you are all good! If, like us, you have several years worth of purchased and gifted cartridge games, you are out of luck in terms of playing them on the Epic. :(
Overall, we are HUGE fans of the Epic, as we have been for all of our previous LeapFrog tablets!
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational
I would recommend this to a friend!

Lives up to its name!

Honestly- I know I say this every time but it’s true! The LeapFrog Epic is my new favorite LeapFrog tablet to date. I think it says a lot about a company that takes feedback from its customers and then comes out with a product that addresses the feedback and is a new and improved model. They are constantly adapting to our kids’ needs and desires! The Epic is easy to hold because of the case and the screen is great resolution. The games are educationally focused but really fun, which is KEY to get my 4 year old to absorb his letters and numbers. Even though we have loved the tablets that LeapFrog has sent in the past, for some reason, this one is the favorite in our house. I’m not sure if the games or dashboard are more interesting, but both my 2 and 4 year old prefer the Epic. They love the videos they can find on the web browsing and the customizable dashboard. The best part to me is how “grown up” my 4 year old feels when he uses it. He would hop out of bed and run to his LeapPad Epic and say “I have to check to see how far away Halloween is!” and then he would check the clock and calendar.
Once again, I can say enough about the Epic- it’s a hit in our household and it has been our lifesaver during quiet times, car rides, and waiting rooms!
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

If upgrading, prepare to be disappointed
on December 8, 2015

I upgraded my 4 yr old from the Leappad 3 to the Epic so his little brother could have his old tablet. What I did not realize is the majority of his Leappad 3 apps are NOT compatible with Epic. This includes several movies and apps I purchased in the past 6 months. Three of the movies are an incredibly popular kid's show so why it wouldn't be on the "popular" list makes no sense. Now I have to buy new apps and videos because he's upset all of his stuff is gone. I'm not very happy considering how much I paid for those apps. Our Leappad 3 isn't even a year old so it isn't like these are old apps. Aside from that the tablet seems cool. It'd be nice if it had a physical home button to get back to the home screen easily.
Pros: Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play

The Best LeapPad

This is our favorite LeapPad and we've had many iterations of LeapPads. I love that it comes with a rubber case and is extra sturdy (no one wants to have a broken tablet). The ease of use is comparable to a kindle fire or an ipad. The screen resolution is great, connectivity to wifi is easy and convenient. It feels like the LeapPad just grown up.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

This tablet lives up to its Epic name!

I was sent this product from Leapfrog in order to facilitate my review.
I have 5 year old twin daughters who immediately set to work play-testing this tablet. We have owned all of the iterations of the LeapPad and this one is, by far, our favorite. Since it is running an Android operating system it loads games much faster than our older (but still loved LeapPads). My girls enjoy (and beg to) play on our iPads and Kindles, but as a tech savvy mom, I feel that these adult products (even with parental controls) are not designed for kids.
This tablet is playable with 20 games and apps right out of the box. The parental controls are the most robust ever. My favorite is the time limits. Each profile (up to three) has a unique homepage that can be customized by your child) and can have unique permissions. I try to limit screen time, but know that the kids really do enjoy and learn from the LeapFrog products. So I can set a maximum time per day that the tablet can be used. I also use the time limits as a timer for taking turns. Once time is up, it is time to give the tablet to sister for her turn.
This is the first LeapFrog Tablet that does not accept cartridges. We have several from our first few years of LeapPad play, and will keep our old tablets in order to play with these. However, our downloaded content from past purchases downloaded to our new LeapFrog Epic as soon as we connected our parent account. The downloadable games tend to be less expensive than the cartridges and the App Store tends to have nice sales. The downloadable apps can be used on up to five connected devices--perfect for a family with twins!
This tablet has front an rear cameras, video camera and voice recorder. My girls enjoy the voice recorder with the Sentence Scrambler game (think updated MadLibs). I enjoy that they look forward to a new word on the Word of the Day app every day! The weather app (just like mom's!) shows the day's weather on the homescreen, which is a fun touch.
This tablet feels very sturdy (though not too heavy) and will grow with my girls. I do not fear them smashing the screen or doing great damage to the machine. This is a tablet that will truly grow with them until they are ready for an adult tablet. All of the games are screened and meet LeapFrog's educational standards and do not have ads or in-app purchases. Their current favorite from the App Store is Doodlejump, but I really like Math Ninja! (if only there could be Sight Word Ninja--hint, hint!)
For years I have been recommending LeapPads to my friends and blog readers, and often some of them wished for something that was more of an actual tablet for the kids to grow into. Finally, LeapFrog has hit a home run!
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

Epic good but needs a little more

Overall the Epic is great. The style, WIFi, bigger storage, etc. Daughter loves it and takes it everywhere.
Only two things need improvement. The internal storage needs to be bigger. 16GB needs 32GB or bigger would be great since my daughter can fill this up very fast. Or make the external slot, software, better. We have problems with Epic not finding the new MicrSD card so we have to reboot. Talked to Support but say to get a new card, still an issue. Apps are unable to download to the MicroSD but that is with any Android Based device.
Pros: Educational, Fun for kids, Good for on-the-go play, Grows with child

Two tablets. Both a pain

We've had leapfrog products for years. I loved our handheld and leaped explorers. They last for years of play! I bought two epics for my youngest boys and within a week both chargers were broken and stylus' were too. The interface isn't as convenient and accessories are not at all easy found to be replaced. I was very disappointed with this products.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Love this Kids Tablet from LeapFrog!

The LeapFrog Epic. This is a brand-new product from LeapFrog with so many new and wonderful features that make this product fun & exciting for kids. We have been big LeapFrog fans in our house & are excited when we heard the release of this one of a kind tablet from LeapFrog. The LeapFrog Epic reminds me of the many wonderful tablets that us adults have, but created just for kids in mind.
With three rough and tumble kids, I don't always feel safe handing over my iPhone or iPad to let them play games, so I love the kid-tough durablitity of the new LeapFrog Epic to allow them to play this on their own without me having to monitor their every minute with the tablet. The home screen is customizable to your kids' interests & super easy for the kids to navigate. My son loves to check his each morning, just so he can tell us the weather report that is displayed on his home screen.
This is the first LeapFrog tablet that does not take game cartridges (no more searching for lost games!). Instead, it comes pre-installed with over 20 games and apps for kids. Some of my kids' favorites include: Fruit Ninja Math Academy, Disney Octonauts Learning Game, & Wacky Weaver's Water Park. There is also access to LeapFrog exclusive content, games, apps, eBooks, and more & the ability to download Android games and apps for kids. This allows my kids to now install some of their favorite Android apps right to their own device! Just like previous LeapFrog games, the games installed on the Epic are created to encourage learning & support critical thinking. One of the things I love most about the Epic is the Just for Me Learning technology. Games will automatically adjust the skill level based on your child's progress in the game, allowing for the game to grow with your child.
The LeapFrog Epic also has a search browser that allows access to the Internet, but ensures only access to approved kid-appropriate web content allowing us to know that our kids will be searching the Internet safely. I can add new websites to the browser or unlock a less restricted browser when my child is ready, allowing the tablet to again grow with my child. As a parent, I also love the ability to set limits on what, when, & how long each child can use the device. All parents have the ability to set parent controls for up to three of their children. With three kids at different levels, it's nice to vary the controls based on each of my children's ability.
I am excited about this new product from LeapFrog. This will be a great learning resource and toy for my kids for many years to come!
