Great build quality, well-designed controls

Bought this as my first agitator-less top load washer, upgrading from a 13-year-old commercial quality Amana top-loader (from back when Amana was a good brand). I briefly considered a front load washer but heard too many complaints from friends who own them regarding mold, odors, leaks, etc.
I'm generally quite pleased with the WT5070CW. The build quality is a few notches above similar Maytag and GE models, and the layout and design of the controls make this appliance easy to use by any member of my family. Although the cycles are longer than those on a traditional top loader, the faster spin speed gets more water out of the clothes, shortening drying times to 40 minutes or less for most loads. The glass lid provides a clear view of your clothes spinning and tumbling, providing hours of entertainment (especially if you have kids on the autism spectrum, as I do).
The basic technology of this washer is to use a combination of spinning the tub and spinning a low-profile cone-shaped protrusion at the bottom of the tub to get the clothes to slosh through the water, or the water to slosh over the clothes. This does seem to get clothes clean, just not as aggressively as a washer with a traditional agitator might. Some parts of the cycles don't inspire much confidence... you just see the tub twitching back and forth a bit, slowly spinning and then stopping, etc. You have to just let this washer do its thing and not worry about it.
My one gripe about the washer is that washing waterproof mattress pads is a real problem, due to the rubber coating trapping water during spin cycles, making the tub immediately become violently unbalanced. LG even puts a warning in the manual and a sticker on the washer advising not to attempt to wash them. What to do, if you've got kids who still wet the bed occasionally? The solution we found was to make tiny slits in the rubber coating of each mattress pad every 4", covering the whole bottom of the pad. The holes are small enough to let very little moisture through on a wet bed, but plentiful enough to let the water escape during a spin cycle. It's not an ideal solution, and it took some work to modify all of our pads, but now we can at least wash them without risking damage to the machine. Hopefully this tip will help someone else. Water-resistant items that you'd rather not puncture this way probably cannot ever be washed in a high-speed washer like this one. Keep this in mind.

The extra water feature is a plus, love it.

Have you ever purchased something and wished you never did? That's how I felt about my previous HE front loader (used very little water) and I couldn't wait to get rid of it and it still worked when it was replaced. Many times I re-washed my clothes because they just didn't smell clean and I finally had enough so I began my hunt for a new washer. I had been looking for awhile when I came across the LG Waveforce. I had my concerns about how clean the clothes would be since this too was an HE but the extra water feature was the selling point for me. My clothes smell clean when I take them out of the washer. I am happy with this purchase and I would recommend this washer to anyone. The only con I have is it takes too long to do a load of laundry but I think that is the way it is with all of the new washers.

Great Washer
on November 4, 2013

I have had this washer for a few months and must say that I have really enjoyed it. This washer has such a large capacity that I can get a lot of laundry done in a single wash which saves me time. I enjoy all of the different cycles, I have even used the wool cycle and was impressed with the results. There are numerous ways to customize the wash cycles and I do enjoy that flexibility. I have no regrets with my purchase and would recommend this machine!

Very disappointed

I purchased in Oct. 2013 the 4.7 cubic foot to be able to do bigger loads only to find out you are not supposed to fill it more than half full, defeats the purpose of getting a bigger washer. I also wash alot of dog beds which are fleece and do not weigh much. Since the washer senses by weight, it doesn't put enough water in under a normal load. So now I have to push the extra rinse and extra water button to get enough water to clean the dog beds and to wash one load takes 1 hour and 40 minutes and still can only wash 4 small beds at one time. Very dissapointed.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is a great washing machine, but I'm really bummed that it can't clean waterproof clothes and mattress protectors.
