Upgraded to full frame, decided on the 5D III over the 6D by my wife's direction (she didn't want me upgrading to something else, again). I shoot mainly people / events so I thought the 6D would be better bang for the buck, however oddly, I found myself actually using the 6 Frames per second, something I never thought I'd use. More impressive is the 61-Point AF, at first it seems complicated, you quickly get the knack for it in a day and it actually is VERY handy once you know how to use it.
Superior ISO sensitivity and noise control as is well known on Canon Full frames, the CF output beats the stuff out of SD output (using a 1000x rated UDMA 7 CF card). Weight isn't bad actually, grows on you quickly, built very well. No complaints on Refurb. My opinion, save your money and pick one up.
Pros: full frame, silent shooting

Captures every moment and expression

As an avid hobbyist photographer (used to develop my own film, back in the day) of 50 years, I am not satisfied with mediocre equipment. I gave up on film 10-12 years ago, and six years ago I got my first Full Frame digital, the 5D. Wow – Depth of field, focal length, f stop, ISO; all the familiar interactions from 35mm film cameras "fit" again. At the time, I thought "Almost as good as film", but much cheaper, since there is no incremental cost for each picture (Film was expensive per shot). Then 3 years ago I got the 5D mk II. Finally – as good as film, maybe better. Video was a nice touch, especially video of my grandkids – with a camera, they pose for the picture, then they think I'm done when I lower the camera from my eye and switch to video. No antics or mugging for the camera-just natural candid recordings.
Two weeks ago I got the 5D mk III.
After a wedding, vacation sightseeing, landscape outing, and general "for the record" shooting opportunities with the mk III, I'm thinking – "This is way better than film".
Image quality – Better tonal gradations, especially of skin – the earth's (fields of flowers, new leaves, blossoms) and people's. By better I mean better than the best film I've used. Better than the 5D mkII. Capturing human expression in a photo is more sensitive to shading and skin tone than I'd realized, and maybe more sensitive than having high resolution. I'm capturing every expression.
Dual cards – no more missed shots when my card fills (it always seemed that my spare card was back in the car, in the house, or home). Some of the best opportunities would pass while I fiddled deleting some rejects to make more room. Now I'm getting every shot.
Great auto focus – With anything more than near dark (had some OOF outside at 8:30 pm in Texas the last day of March (nearly pitch black), but just 30 minutes earlier focus was spot on), nailed the focus for what I was focused on. Not always what I wanted – the 6 modes requires some experimentation and learning of the pros and cons of each, and remembering to switch to the appropriate mode. With deliberate shots using shallow Depth of Field, the focus was perfect every shot; much better than the mk II. Crowd scenes were trickier. Needed to select the focus point, pre-focus with a spot focus, or be satisfied with focus on the closest subject. The capability is there for perfection, however, and I know I'm getting in-focused pictures of things and people I'd never have gotten with any other camera I've used.
Quiet shutter mode – Wonderful! In a public setting, or with kids/animals, I can take pictures without distracting anyone. I'm much more willing to take the shot and capture the moment now with the mk III.
Chromatic Aberration Correction – Finally! Amateurs don't always get to choose the perfect shooting angle; I have more backlit pictures than I'd care to admit. However, with some lenses the CA is awful. Found no purple or green fringing with high contrast shots with the mk III, while many of my mk II photos would be unusable. More keepers.
The many other little features (HDR – tried a few), lock on mode dial, etc. all add up to more good photos taken & fewer missed opportunities.
Bottom line – I'm capturing more photos, good photos, and getting more beautiful pictures of people and things than with any other camera I've used, and that is what photography is about for me. Terrific!!!
Pros: quiet, dual cards, dead on af, ca correction, great iq
Cons: pricy, complex af selection

There is 5D Mark 4 and 6D Mark 2, but 5D Mark 3 is the best one. 5D Mark 4 is just minor update from 5Dmk3. 6Dmk2 has many features, but it can't bit 5Dmk3's outcome. I love 5Dmk3 :)

A true workhorse!

The Canon 5D Mark III is a excellent camera. Have owned it since November 2012 and enjoyed the camera immensely. The AF system and speed of focus is truly remarkable and 6 FPS makes it possible to capture the images when needed. Amazing pictures in low light! Have been impressed in all situations (portrait, landscape, formal events and sports). Though pricey, you get what you pay for and so much much. Was initially going to purchase the 7D but very glad that I went with the 5D instead. The EF lenses (L series) have made this camera a photographer's dream and one to rival any other full frame camera in its class. This camera is a workhorse and is built for the professional and the amateur enthusiast alike.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, superior image
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, pricey

An awesome tool

I'll start by saying I only have one day under my belt with the Mark III. I had been a 7D user for the last couple of years and was very happy with the performance of the camera. I'm shooting sports most of the time but have found myself shooting a much broader range of subjects. The 5D mark III seemed to be a perfect transition having an increased frame rate over the Mark II, improved AF system and full frame sensor. I am thoroughly overjoyed with what I am seeing so far. The layout of the controls are straightforward and in the right positions. An easy transition for a 7D user. The build is a bit bulkier in a good way and I feel that it fits my hands better than the 7D. The image quality is really quite phenomenol and cannot wait to see what it can do across a broader range of requirements. The performance at the higher ISO ranges is far superior than my 7D and after after some test shots at 12,800 the proof was in the picture. I cannot wait to get back into a gym where the lighting is typically terrible and see what I can do. I haven't even scratched the surface with what the camera can do but I was so excited about what I have already seen that I needed to get it out. The price was a bit salty for me but I quickly got past it after getting it in my hands and taking some shots. If you're on the fence about taking the plunge, just do it and be happy like I am!

Very Nice Camera

I've shot a little over 5,000 pictures with my 5D Mark 3 using an EF 300mm f/2.8L IS, an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 24-70mm f/2.8, EF 135mm f/2L and EF 17-40mm f/4L. The subjects range family to landscapes to NFL. It's a really great camera. The focus system is a little obnoxious to use compared to my 1D2N but is way more accurate, the best I've ever used. This camera just focuses the way cameras "are supposed to" as they say and as such is a pleasure to use.
I can't say very much about video. It looks broadcast-quality good but without full-time focus I'm not interested. For family stuff I prefer an iPhone for video. (That's how Pro Video oriented I am)
The RAW files are detailed and very easy to work with in PS CS6 though I do think Adobe's profiles need some re-work. As has been mentioned elsewhere (and almost everywhere) the shadow and CA noise levels are disappointing to say the least but can be managed somewhat by either Photoshop or DPP.
The JPGs are nice but their details are way too smeared and this camera's sharpening routine is halo producing and primitive. It's better to shoot with sharpening at 1 and finish it later which seems to negate one of the reasons to shoot JPGs.
All in all I'm very happy with my purchase. I would be really pleased to see a firmware update in the near future to produce better JPGs and less noise everywhwere.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, superior focus system
Cons: noisy, shadow noise, excessive ca, lots of noise even at iso 200, slow therefore useless sd card slot

exceeds my expectations

This camera has two features that I can't do without, the high ISO and the two card system. I spent two weeks on safari. We would go out twice a day, once just before sunrise and them just before sunset. I would adjust the ISO any where from 100 to 26,000 depending on the natural light available. At one point I asked the guide to turn off his spotlight on a lepard so I could get a better shot. The two card system was great. I had a 64GB CF card and a 32GB SD. It was real easy to shoot my video on the 64 then switch to the 32 for the stills. Things happen fast in the bush and this camera always got the shot even in auto mode. It focussed fast under all light situations. In two weeks I NEVER took my flash out of the bag. It is that good!
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use, great iso range
